Executive Council works to ensure effective strategic planning and coordinated policy development and communications across government, engages Albertans and the broader global community, and promotes a vibrant and innovative public service.
Communications and Public Engagement (CPE) is the Government of Alberta’s full-service communications, public relations and marketing agency.
CPE provides planning, execution and measurement of all communications efforts. Its expert staff provide specialized services across the spectrum of communications and marketing from research, design, writing and social media, to event coordination, issues management, digital communications, advertising and public engagement.
The agency staffs the external communications functions in all departments of government and its operations branch, with a mandate of enhancing communications between the people and the Government of Alberta.

CPE is seeking a User Experience (UX) Designer to help shape the ongoing evolution of digital communications in government. As the Government of Alberta’s primary public-facing platform, Alberta.ca plays a central role in communicating and delivering programs, policies, and services to Albertans.
Working with stakeholders across CPE and the broader Government of Alberta, the UX Designer will identify complex usability challenges and use qualitative research methods to deliver high-quality, user-centred design solutions.

Responsibilities
Strategic User Experience Research and Consultation
- Completes research and analysis requirements to arrive at evidence-based decisions for design concepts.
- Leads the planning and execution of comprehensive user research and analysis using a multitude of UX methods to inform evidence-based design decisions.
- Translate user feedback and research findings into well-designed high-fidelity mock-ups.
- Build design files and documentation that can be easily understood by the Front-End Designer and downstream Full Stack Developers.
- Produce mock-ups and prototypes of various levels of fidelity in order to communicate production specifications and business requirements.
- Utilizes existing UX design processes, standards, and best practices to improve the usability of design artifacts and components on Alberta.ca.
- Establishes and monitors key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure the effectiveness of UX initiatives and team performance.
- Continuously improve and explore new process ideas to further the efficiency, innovation and productivity within the Research, Analysis and Digital Experience (RADX) team in CPE.
- Works with RADX teammates in preparation for and execution of stakeholder meetings, acting the primary point of contact for the clients once the project is established.

Qualifications
Minimum Recruitment Standards
- A related university degree in design or related field plus 2 years progressively responsible related experience in design and research; or equivalent as described below.
- 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
- 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.
Assets
- Understand UX and web design best practices and their application to complex challenges within a wide-reaching organization environment.
- Expert knowledge of UX principles, methodologies, and best practices across the entire design lifecycle (research, analysis, ideation, design, and validation).
- Advanced skills in qualitative and quantitative research methods, including usability testing, surveys, interviews, and analytics, as well as knowledge of research ethics.
- Excellent facilitation and consulting skills, with the ability to lead workshops, build consensus, and manage complex stakeholder relationships.
- Strong project management and organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize tasks, and work directly with others.
- In-depth knowledge of relevant technologies, multi-channel and multi-device experiences, accessibility standards (WCAG), and their impact on design.
- Demonstrated ability to think strategically and align team activities with broader organizational objectives.
- Exceptional communication (verbal and written), presentation, and interpersonal skills, including conflict resolution.
- Proficiency with industry-standard design and prototyping tools (e.g., Figma, Adobe Creative Suite).
