Senior Backend Engineer | AI Infrastructure | San Francisco (On-site)

I'm working with a well-funded AI startup that's building the infrastructure powering the next generation of autonomous AI agents.

Backed by top-tier Silicon Valley investors with over $30M in funding, they're tackling some of the hardest engineering problems in AI—turning real-world agent behaviour into structured learning systems that continuously improve model performance.

What you'll be working on

You'll be building highly scalable backend systems responsible for:

• High-throughput telemetry and event ingestion
• Distributed evaluation pipelines
• Large-scale OLAP data infrastructure
• Workflow orchestration and scheduling
• Customer-facing APIs
• AI evaluation and reinforcement learning data pipelines

This is a role for engineers who enjoy solving complex distributed systems challenges rather than building simple CRUD applications.

You'll be responsible for

• Designing scalable backend services that process millions of AI events
• Building distributed workflow systems for AI evaluation
• Optimising high-performance analytical databases
• Developing APIs powering AI infrastructure products
• Working across backend, data engineering and cloud infrastructure
• Collaborating closely with customers and product teams to shape the platform

What they're looking for

• Strong backend engineering experience in production environments
• Experience building distributed systems at scale
• Solid understanding of API design, data modelling and system performance
• Experience with event-driven architectures, messaging systems or telemetry pipelines
• Comfortable owning services from design through to production

Nice to have

Experience with one or more of the following:

• ClickHouse
• Kafka, RabbitMQ or similar messaging systems
• Temporal or workflow orchestration platforms
• OpenTelemetry
• AI infrastructure, LLM platforms or machine learning systems
