Database Specialist

Database Administration & Management:

• Install, configure, and maintain Microsoft SQL Server environments (multiple versions).
• Manage and administer PostgreSQL databases in production and development environments.
• Provide basic administration support for Oracle databases (secondary responsibility).
• Monitor database performance, identify bottlenecks, and implement tuning improvements.
• Manage database backup, recovery, and disaster recovery (DR) strategies.
• Manage and support database environments hosted on cloud platforms, ensuring performance, availability, security, and cost optimization.
• Perform regular health checks and ensure high availability.
• Maintain database security, including user roles, permissions, and access control.
• Ensure compliance with internal IT policies, security standards, and audit requirements.

SQL Development & Optimization:

• Design, develop, and optimize stored procedures, functions, views, and complex SQL queries.
• Perform query tuning and execution plan analysis to improve performance.
• Support application teams with efficient database design and query logic.
• Maintain and optimize database indexing strategies.
• Implement database auditing and logging mechanisms.

Data Integration & ETL:

• Design and support ETL processes for data migration, transformation, and integration.
• Work with ETL tools (e.g., SSIS or equivalent) to manage data pipelines.
• Ensure data accuracy, consistency, and integrity across systems.
• Support integration between ERP systems, data warehouse, and other applications.
• Assist in building data feeds for reporting tools such as Power BI.

Monitoring & Operations:

• Monitor database servers, jobs, and scheduled tasks.
• Troubleshoot and resolve database-related incidents within SLA.
• Review logs, disk usage, and system performance metrics.
• Coordinate with infrastructure teams for storage, backups, and server performance.
• Ensure database environments (Dev/UAT/Prod) are aligned and consistent.

Support & Collaboration:

• Provide database support for ERP systems and other enterprise applications.
• Assist developers in database-related issues and performance tuning.
• Coordinate with vendors for database-related support and upgrades.
• Participate in system upgrades, migrations, and implementation projects.
• Provide after-hours support when required.

Documentation & Governance:

• Maintain up-to-date database documentation (architecture, configurations, procedures).
• Document backup, recovery, and DR procedures.
• Ensure proper change management and version control for database objects.
• Support audits and compliance reviews related to databases.

Security & Data Governance Collaboration:

• Work closely with the Cybersecurity / SOC team to identify, assess, and remediate database-related vulnerabilities.
• Support vulnerability assessments, penetration testing activities, and ensure timely closure of database security findings.
• Implement database security best practices including patching, encryption, auditing, and access control.
• Participate in security incident response activities related to database systems.
• Contribute to Data Warehouse initiatives, supporting:
• Data governance frameworks and standards
• Master data management (MDM) practices
• Data quality and consistency across systems
• Design and understanding of data marts and data models
• Collaborate with Data Warehouse and BI teams to ensure proper data structuring, transformation, and availability.

Vendor & Contract Management (Database Domain):

• Act as the focal point for all database-related vendors, tools, and software solutions.
• Coordinate with vendors for support, maintenance, upgrades, and issue resolution.
• Manage and track database-related contracts, licenses, and renewals (e.g., SQL Server, PostgreSQL tools, monitoring solutions).
• Support the evaluation, selection, and implementation of new database technologies and tools in alignment with business requirements.
• Ensure all vendor activities comply with organizational policies, security standards, and governance frameworks.
• Work closely with procurement and IT management on database-related purchases and initiatives, providing technical input and recommendations.
• Monitor vendor performance and ensure adherence to agreed SLAs and support commitments.

Day-To-Day Operations:

• Monitor and maintain the performance, availability, and overall health of the database systems, primarily Microsoft SQL Server and PostgreSQL, ensuring optimal functionality across production, UAT, and development environments.
• Execute, analyze, and continuously optimize complex SQL queries, stored procedures, functions, and views to support business applications, reporting requirements, and data integration processes.
• Proactively review database logs, job executions, and system resource utilization (CPU, memory, disk space), taking corrective actions to prevent performance degradation or system failures.
• Manage and monitor database backup processes, restoration procedures, and scheduled maintenance activities, ensuring data integrity and readiness for disaster recovery scenarios.
• Handle database user management activities, including creation, modification, and revocation of access rights, while ensuring compliance with security policies and segregation of duties.
• Collaborate closely with the Cybersecurity (SOC) team to monitor, assess, and remediate database-related vulnerabilities, participate in security incident investigations, and ensure timely application of patches and security controls.
• Support data extraction, reporting, and analytics requirements by providing accurate and efficient datasets for business users, reporting tools, and data visualization platforms such as Power BI.
• Participate actively in Data Warehouse initiatives by supporting data governance practices, maintaining data quality, contributing to master data management efforts, and ensuring proper structuring and availability of data for downstream systems, including data marts.
• Monitor and maintain ETL processes and data pipelines, ensuring smooth data flow between systems, timely execution of jobs, and consistency of transformed data across integrated platforms.
• Coordinate with database vendors and technology providers for issue resolution, system updates, and maintenance activities, while ensuring compliance with service level agreements and internal governance standards.
• Work closely with application teams, ERP support teams, and infrastructure teams to troubleshoot database-related issues, optimize system performance, and support ongoing projects and enhancements.
• Ensure consistency and synchronization between different database environments (Development, UAT, Production), supporting deployments, testing activities, and release management processes.
• Maintain up-to-date operational documentation, including database configurations, procedures, and troubleshooting guidelines, ensuring knowledge continuity and audit readiness.
• Respond to database-related incidents, service requests, and change requirements in a timely and professional manner, ensuring minimal disruption to business operations and adherence to defined SLAs

Continuous Improvement:

• Ensure a working culture of continuous improvement through a process of quality assurance among the Port Control Officers.
• Participate in the identification of opportunities for continuous improvement and sustainability of systems, processes and practices considering global best standards, productivity improvement and cost reduction.

Requirements

Minimum Qualification:

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Information Technology, or a related field, preferably with specialization in Database Systems or Data Management.

Minimum Experience & Knowledge & Skills:

• Minimum 3 to 5 years of recent hands-on experience in a DBA role with direct responsibility for managing production database environments.
• Strong practical experience with:
• Microsoft SQL Server (Primary – mandatory)
• PostgreSQL (Required working experience; advanced proficiency preferred)
• Oracle Database (Basic/secondary knowledge; working experience is an advantage)
• Hands-on experience in managing databases in cloud environments, preferably Microsoft Azure (e.g., Azure SQL Database, Managed Instances, or related services).
• Understanding of cloud-based database architecture, performance optimization, backup, and security in cloud platforms.

Certifications (Required / Preferred):

• At least one recognized official certification in Database Administration (e.g., Microsoft SQL Server, PostgreSQL, or Oracle) is preferred.
• Completion of relevant database training courses, workshops, or professional certifications is considered an advantage
