Location: Remote in the UK - We like to get together on a monthly basis to work through problems in person. However, if you're based in London and prefer working in an office, we have a co-working space you can use.

We’re now looking for a Backend Engineer to join our lean, agile and product-focused engineering team as we continue to build a modern auto insurance company.

The role

As a Backend Engineer at Just, you’ll play a key role in designing, building and maintaining the scalable APIs, services and systems that power our core platform, mobile applications and machine learning pipelines.

This is not a role where you’ll be stuck maintaining outdated legacy systems. You’ll be working on modern cloud infrastructure, building greenfield features, improving data flows and directly influencing the technical architecture of a fast-moving product.

You’ll join an engineering team that cares deeply about high-quality code, good architecture, evolvable systems and solving real customer problems.

What you’ll be doing

You’ll be responsible for developing and maintaining our Node.js services, working across backend systems that support our insurance platform, mobile apps and partner integrations.

You’ll contribute to the architecture, future direction and sustainability of Just’s engineering strategy, helping shape how our systems scale as the business grows.

You’ll work closely with product, design and other engineers to deliver high-quality features quickly and thoughtfully.

You’ll take ownership of the services you build, including reliability, observability and participating in on-call responsibilities.

Our technology

We use a modern, cloud-native engineering stack and place a strong emphasis on building systems that are scalable, maintainable and easy to evolve.

Our backend services are built in Node.js and TypeScript, with GCP as our main cloud platform. We primarily use Postgres, alongside Datastore and Redis for specific use cases.

Our frontend and mobile products are built with React, React Native and TypeScript.

We use Domain-Driven Design and Hexagonal Architecture, particularly across our core services, to make sure complex insurance domains are expressed clearly and can evolve quickly.

Our systems are highly event-driven, with asynchronous communication across services using Pub/Sub.

For observability, we use DataDog across metrics, APM, distributed tracing and wider system monitoring.

We use CircleCI for build pipelines across backend and frontend, and our infrastructure is deployed using Terraform. Our backend services live in a monorepo.

Our main public API surface is GraphQL, used by our website, mobile app and third-party partners.

What we’re looking for

We’re looking for someone who is passionate about backend engineering, distributed systems and building reliable software.

You’ll have experience building systems in Node.js, using either TypeScript or JavaScript, and you’ll care deeply about writing well-tested, maintainable code.

You’ll be comfortable thinking about architecture, system design and how services behave in production.

You’ll be able to explain complex technical concepts clearly, whether you’re speaking with engineers, product teams or non-technical stakeholders.

You’ll have a good understanding of computer science fundamentals and be comfortable working in a fast-moving environment using Agile and Lean start-up principles.

Nice to have

Experience working in a start-up, scale-up or high-performing engineering culture would be highly valued, but it’s not essential.

Experience with GCP, GraphQL, event-driven architecture, Terraform, DataDog, DDD or Hexagonal Architecture would also be useful.
