About Wirepas NMS

Wirepas NMS is our cloud-based network monitoring and management component for Wirepas Mesh deployments. It continuously ingests telemetry and operational data from large fleets of devices: connectivity status, mesh reliability analytics, topology and traceroute data, traffic statistics, and resource usage metrics. This data is aggregated at multiple levels and time intervals and exposed to operators through REST APIs and a web dashboard.

The challenge we need to solve

Our challenge is data throughput, not concurrent users. Customer deployments scaling up means larger device fleets and higher message rates and the amount of data flowing into and through NMS increases substantially. We need to understand where the real pressure points are, how our services interact with the database, how the schema holds up under increasing load, how partitioning and retention are managed, and how connection patterns across microservices affect database performance.

We are not looking for a quick fix. We need someone who can look at the whole system, the interaction between our service architecture and database behavior, and propose structural improvements that will scale with us. This is a new position in our organization.

As a Senior Database Analyst, your tasks include:

• Analyze how NMS microservices interact with PostgreSQL - write patterns, read patterns, connection management
• Assess the current schema design and data modelling choices in the context of a high-throughput, append-heavy, time-series-oriented workload.
• Evaluate partitioning strategy, retention policies, and TimescaleDB usage (hypertables, compression, continuous aggregates) and identify gaps or improvements.
• Identify how Kafka-to-PostgreSQL ingestion pipelines behave under load
• Identify and resolve key bottlenecks in database usage, proposing structural changes needed to achieve sustainable throughput at scale.
• Work closely with the rest of the engineering team to prioritize, implement, and validate improvements in stages.

What we are looking for

Essential

• Good spoken and written English as English is our company language.
• Real-world experience optimizing database performance in production systems handling high-volume, continuous data ingestion
• Understanding of database usage at the service architecture level - understanding how microservice interaction patterns, write concurrency, and data flows drive database load and degrade performance.
• Experience with time-series or append-heavy workloads: large tables growing continuously, aggregation at multiple time granularities, retention and data lifecycle management.
• Strong schema design skills - ability to evaluate trade-offs in data modelling for throughput rather than just for query convenience.
• Comfortable diagnosing and improving systems you did not build, in a production-grade codebase.

Nice to Have

• Understanding PostgreSQL internals
• Experience with TimescaleDB — hypertables, chunk management, compression policies, continuous aggregates, and retention automation.
• Familiarity with Kubernetes environments and containers
• Experience on systems relying on Kafka message transfer
• Prior work experience in IoT, smart metering, or industrial data platforms with high device-to-backend message rates.
• Data analysis and related tools.
