At Better we are building software solutions that help medical teams improve patient care. Our advanced open-data medical platform and healthcare applications already support over 30 million patients’ electronic health records worldwide, making data quality our number one priority.
This is where you come in, as our new Technical lead. The Technical lead role is a senior hands-on technical role responsible for leading the technical delivery of Better Platform implementations across multiple customer programmes. The role sits within the Professional Services delivery team and combines deep platform expertise with team leadership: guiding engineers, architects, and integration specialists while remaining actively involved in technical decision-making, solution design, and customer-facing delivery. The Technical lead role is the primary technical authority for assigned programmes and acts as the escalation point for complex technical issues across the team.
Skills and expertise you need to excel in this position:
- Proven experience leading and mentoring technical team members, including engineers, integration architects, and technical analysts, in a delivery context.
- Experience with XML, SQL/database technologies, ETL tooling, and API-based system integrations, including third-party vendor interfaces.
- Ability to read, produce, and review technical solution design documents, integration specifications, data mapping artefacts, and architecture documentation.
- Confident engaging with customers at a senior technical level: leading workshops, presenting solution designs, and following up on agreed actions.
- Strong working knowledge of interoperability standards: openEHR (Reference Model, AQL, templates), HL7 FHIR (R4, profiling, API patterns), and IHE adapter patterns.
- Deep, hands-on knowledge of the Better Platform backend, including the CDR, ODR, openEHR storage layer, FHIR APIs, ETL pipelines, API connectors, IHE adapters, and XML document structure interfaces.
How will you drive success in this role through your daily actions?
- Technical leadership: Act as the primary technical authority across assigned programmes, owning decisions on implementation, configuration, and integration, and serving as the escalation point for complex platform issues (coordinating with Better HQ engineering as needed).
- Team leadership: Lead, mentor, and develop engineers, integration specialists, and technical analysts through reviews, structured guidance, and performance feedback; support capacity planning and scope future technical roles with the Director of Professional Services.
- Delivery management: Manage the technical workstream across multiple concurrent programmes, ensuring integration milestones, configuration deliverables, and quality gates are met, and owning the technical quality of all outputs (designs, specifications, configurations, test evidence).
- Platform & documentation standards: Drive best practices for configuration management, environment promotion (dev/test/prod), and technical documentation, maintaining change management discipline and flagging risks promptly to the project manager and Director of Professional Services.
- Solution design: Lead technical design of new integrations, configurations, and platform extensions, producing clear architecture and specification documentation for internal and customer review.
- Customer engagement: Lead customer-facing workshops, architecture reviews, and integration sessions, presenting complex concepts clearly to varied audiences whilst building trusted, long-term technical relationships as the recognised authority for assigned programmes.
- Pre-sales & commercial support: Support pre-sales with feasibility assessments, effort estimates, and tender content, whilst staying current on Better Platform developments and open standards (openEHR, FHIR, IHE) to bring relevant insights back to the team and customers.
What will you receive as a valued member of the Better team?
