Geo data scientist

Project Overview:

An ambitious EU research project aiming to bridge cutting-edge AI research with real-world geothermal resource exploration to improve geothermal resource identification analyzing remote sensing data contributing to sustainable energy advancements.

Position Summary:

For one our recent research EU project, We are seeking a passionate researcher with expertise in AI/ML applications for geospatial data, preferably with a geoscience background. The ideal candidate will not only have strong technical skills but also has the possibility to lead and also the passion to drive to transition research outcomes into real-world applications, with an entrepreneurial interest for future market impact.

Key Responsibilities:

• Develop and refine machine learning models (e.g., XGBoost, LSTM CNNs, Autoencoder) focused on geospatial data for identifying geothermal resource potential.
• Perform data preprocessing and feature engineering for large-scale datasets, including remote sensing, geological, and environmental data.
• Collaborate with geoscientists and domain experts in our network and outside to validate model outputs and improve predictive accuracy.
• Contribute to the design and development of a user-friendly decision support system, with a focus on GIS-based visualization tools to support field and operational use.
• Explore pathways to integrate research findings into market-ready solutions, with potential future applications in sustainable energy.

Required Qualifications:

• Educational Background: MSc or PhD in Geoscience, Geospatial Science, Data Science, Computer Science, or a related field with a strong focus on AI/ML.
• AI/ML Expertise: Proven experience in machine learning, particularly in models suited for geospatial applications (e.g., XGBoost, CNNs).
• Programming Skills: Proficiency in Python for data analysis, ML model development, and geospatial data integration.
• Geospatial Data Proficiency: Experience in working with geospatial datasets, including feature extraction and spatial data processing.

Preferred Qualifications:

• GIS Expertise: Proficiency in ArcGIS for spatial analysis and data visualization.
• Geoscience Background: Knowledge of geological or geothermal data, with an understanding of geoscience applications in AI.
• Entrepreneurial Mindset: Interest in exploring pathways for research-to-market applications, with a drive for operational impact.

Additional Skills (Advantageous):

• Google Earth Engine (GEE): Experience with GEE for data acquisition, processing, and real-time satellite data integration.
• Data Visualization: Experience in creating GIS-based interactive maps, dashboards, or visualization tools.
• Field Data Integration: Familiarity with integrating field data into GIS or ML models for validation and real-world adaptation.
