The Automation Technology and Mechanical Engineering Unit (ATME) at Tampere University invites applications for several summer trainee positions in the fields of Innovative Hydraulics and Automation, Process Control, FAST-Lab, Dependable Systems Automation CyberLab, and Mechatronics.
Job Description
The research assistants / summer trainees will assist the research groups at ATME by performing a broad variety of tasks. The research interests of our groups cover a wide range of fields, including robotics, automation, modularisation, integration and automation programming, and numerical algorithms. ATME seeks to maintain a balance between basic and industrially applicable research and has been recognized for research excellence in both areas.
The positions will be filled for a fixed-term period of 3 months, commencing on 1 June 2025 or as mutually agreed. A trial period of one month will apply.
Summer trainee in IHA Zonal hydraulics group will Improve her/his simulation and practical skills! A trainee will work on the further development of electro-hydraulic hydraulics concept and AI-based condition monitoring for the electric and hybrid off-road mobile machinery, assist with following:
The summer job is a hands-on experience in improving the existing experimental setup and visualization in the Nebolab with the goal of developing a framework which allows a smooth transition from simulation to implementation in our experimental system using both the ground mobile robots and nano-quadcopters. You will also have the opportunity to test the system that you developed using various autonomous robotic control algorithm, see for example the demo in our lab: https://www.youtube.com/@tuni-iines . This position is highly suitable for students passionate about robotics and looking to apply their skills (e.g., ROS2, Python programming) in a real-world, cutting-edge setting.
Multiple topics suitable for summer trainee in extending Tampere Cyber City e.g. integrating steam engine as PLC controlled power supply for the Cyber City street lights, integrating traffic lights and wirelessly controlled for Lego train as traffic management solution, building a AR model (Digital Twin) of the Cyber City and integrating real-time measurements to the model, converting existing VR model of distillation process into AR model and integrating real-time measurements to the model, integrating ValmetDNA into distillation process AR model and many more. Depending on the subject the report language requirement may be Finnish since the outcomes are used in Critical Infrastructure Cyber Security Training in Finland. Required interest areas should be some subset of the following:
Multiple topics are available for trainees. They can be divided into two branches. A first branch of topics dedicated to the development of the WAAM process by integration on the platform of new sensors and development of design of experiments to print parts and collect data generated by the sensors.
the second category of topics is trying to exploit the use of the data as well as the metadata to generate control models improving the stability and quality of the printing process.
The manufacturing platform has a dual use and can also be employed for welding purpose.
Interest areas for the trainees: The trainees interest areas can be varied but should integrate at least one of the following topics, manufacturing, additive manufacturing, process development, applied mathematics, Artificial intelligence, automation, data analytics, engineering design.

As a summer trainee in the DARES Group, you will engage in a hands-on project aligned with your interests and our group’s expertise. This role offers the opportunity to contribute to ongoing research in dependable automation while gaining valuable experience in developing innovative solutions for system resilience. Prospective trainees can focus on one of the following areas, selected based on their interests:
As a summer trainee, you will have an opportunity to contribute to research studies conducted in our group on autonomous mobile manipulation. Your role would include implementation of machine learning and optimal control methods in both simulation and real robots. Great programming skills (Python and maybe C++) are a must-have. Familiarity with machine learning and optimal control frameworks such as torch, Jax, Casadi is a big plus.

We are looking for science and engineering students who enjoy problem-solving, have the ability to think independently and work in an international research environment, and possess good social and team working skills. Potential candidates include, for example, students in their 1st to 4th year who have successfully completed their studies, for example, in automation or mechanical engineering. A good command of both spoken and written English will be considered an advantage.

The salary will be based on both the job demands and the employee’s personal performance in accordance with the Finnish University Salary System. According to the criteria applied to teaching and research staff, the position of research assistant is placed on the job demand level 1. In addition, employees will receive performance-based salary, which in the case of research assistants is based on the number of credits they have earned towards their degree. A typical starting salary for research assistant is approximately 2200 euros / month.

Tehtävät liittyvät tutkimusryhmissä tehtävään tutkimukseen. Tutkimusryhmiä ovat mm. FAST-lab, Innovatiivinen hydrauliikka ja automaatio, modulointi, mekatroniikan tutkimusryhmä ja prosessien säädön ryhmä. Tutkimusryhmissä kesäharjoittelijat työskentelevät mm. robotiikan, automaation, järjestelmäintegroinnin, ohjelmoinnin ja numeeristen algoritmien parissa.
