Azure DevOps Administrator (B2B, full-time)

WHAT WE DO

We are set up to provide our customers with end-to-end support in the process of developing software solutions:

• Business need analysis, design of functional and non-functional requirements, system analysis, support for business transformation and IT/business consultancy;
• User interface and experience design and development for mobile and desktop applications;
• Front and back-end development in a wide range of technologies: Java, .Net, Ruby, GoLang, Oracle, Python.
• Complete Data Warehouse solutions from architecture, design and implementation using mainly Vertica, Oracle and Microsoft platforms.
• Avalanche has been the central counterparty for multiple major banking projects in the Scandinavia and Baltics, in areas such as lending automation, regulatory reporting and calculations, integrations, governance, risk and compliance, Basel II/III, Stress Testing, AML/KYC.

Avalanche Labs is looking for an Azure DevOps Administrator to join our growing team. Your first project will be with the largest insurance company in the Nordics. In this role, you will be responsible for helping our client’s development teams unleash their potential by helping them through the centralized Development tool offerings. The development Teams are mainly using Microsoft for development so tools like Azure DevOps, SonarQube, SNYK are some of the tools as a centralized offering. DevOps culture is also an important aspect of the work as-is the cloud first strategy.

The role requires deep expertise in Azure DevOps administration, not just DevOps pipeline experience. The ADO platform is used at scale, with 2,700+ users, requiring strict governance and control. The role’s criticality comes from the potential for misconfigurations to impact entire teams and workflows.

WHAT WE EXPECT

✅ Deep expertise in Azure DevOps Administration

✅ Strong understanding of ADO access management models (hierarchical security layers, group-based access, individual roles)

✅ Experience managing & troubleshooting ADO work item templates

✅ Familiarity with Azure Repos (Git-based version control within ADO)

✅ Pipeline troubleshooting knowledge (though not responsible for DevOps engineering)

✅ Experience with cloud-based build service management

WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING

➡️ Access Control & Security Governance

Highest-level access holder in ADO, responsible for administering permissions across the organization.

Manages user roles and access levels with a deep understanding of:

- Organization-level access control (Azure AD integration)

- Project vs. collection-level permissions

- Inheritance & overrides in security settings

- Handling team-based access restrictions (e.g., defining what each role can do)

- Field-level access control to ensure data security and visibility

Avoiding misconfigurations that could lead to data loss or security breaches.

Works closely with internal IT security teams to align ADO access with corporate security policies.

Troubleshoots complex permission issues, often involving nested roles and group-based access rules.

➡️ Project Onboarding & Work Item Template Management

New project requests must be mapped to existing ADO templates (~200 templates available).

Responsibilities include:

- Assessing business needs and identifying the best-fitting work item template

- Ensuring data model compatibility (cannot create new templates due to quota limits)

- Guiding project administrators on customizing existing templates without breaking global structures

Template misuse can lead to:

- Reporting inconsistencies

- Data integrity issues across projects

- Compliance violations with company-wide development standards

➡️ Build & Deployment Service Oversight

Public build servers are available for all development teams, requiring continuous monitoring to ensure uptime.

The role involves:

- Checking build queue performance and optimizing resource allocation

- Investigating failed builds that might be due to access restrictions, missing dependencies, or misconfigured pipelines

- Coordinating cloud migration efforts, as ADO build services are being moved to Microsoft’s cloud-managed solution

➡️ ADO Expert & Organization-Wide Support

Acts as the company-wide subject matter expert for Azure DevOps.

Receives requests daily from various teams, ranging from:

- Basic access issues ('I can’t see my project board')

- More complex requests ('How do we enforce role-based restrictions on our releases?')

Typical support cases include:

- Onboarding new users/projects into ADO with correct permissions

- Troubleshooting repository access issues in Azure Repos (version control)

➡️ Planning & Workflow Customization Support

Planning is the primary focus of this role, as most teams rely on ADO for agile workflows.

Responsibilities include:

- Ensuring proper board configurations (Scrum, Kanban, SAFe)

- Supporting teams in work item tracking & backlog prioritization

- Customizing dashboards & reporting for leadership insights
