This role is in the DroneShield Sydney headquarters in Pyrmont, Sydney. There are approximately 200 staff based in the 4,000sqm facility today, scheduled to grow to approximately 300 staff by end of 2026. Overseas on the ground presence includes Virginia (USA), Denmark, Germany and Dubai, as well as distributors in over 70 countries globally.

About The Role

We are seeking a skilled and passionate Java Developer to join our growing software development team. This role offers an exciting opportunity to work on Android applications interfacing with embedded systems and software, contributing to the development of world-class solutions that help keep people and assets safe.

Responsibilities, Duties And Expectations

• Create efficient, high-quality, and scalable Java-based Android apps that interface with embedded systems and software
• Work closely with embedded software engineers to ensure seamless communication between mobile applications and embedded systems, contributing to the integration of both hardware and software solutions
• Design and implement user-friendly interfaces for mobile applications, ensuring a smooth and intuitive experience for end users
• Identify and resolve issues in the application code, collaborate with cross-functional teams to solve complex technical challenges, and optimise app performance
• Write and maintain unit tests, perform rigorous testing of applications, and ensure that applications meet quality standards before deployment
• Document development processes, technical specifications, and software designs to ensure clear communication within the development team
• Stay up-to-date with the latest Android development trends and best practices, continuously seeking opportunities to improve application performance, functionality, and user experience.
  
  

Qualifications, Experience And Skills

• Bachelor"s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field (or significant experience)
• Proven experience in Java development for Android apps (Java 8 or later), with a portfolio of completed projects (including any personal or open-source contributions)
• Strong proficiency in Kotlin for Android development
• Experience with Android SDK, APIs, and mobile app development tools
• Familiarity with embedded systems and the challenges involved in integrating Android applications with hardware
• Knowledge of embedded communication protocols (e.g., UART, SPI, I2C, etc.) is desirable
• Experience with version control systems such as Git
• Familiarity with Agile development methodologies and modern software development practices
• Strong problem-solving skills and a proactive, solution-oriented approach to development
• Ability to work in a collaborative team environment and communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders
• A passion for developing high-quality, performance-driven software.
  
  

Desirable Skills

• Experience in setting up Android development environments.
• Previous exposure to developing TAK Plugins
• Experience with Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or other wireless communication protocols used for embedded systems.
• Familiarity with real-time data processing and signal handling.
• Knowledge of security considerations when working with mobile applications and embedded systems.
