Project Director, Australian Government Consulting

Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet
Australia · Full-time · Not Applicable

About our team

Australian Government Consulting (AGC) was established to help the Australian Public Service (APS) confidently meet current and future challenges in-house, and selectively engage external consultants in a way that maximises value-for-money.

We do this by delivering high-quality consulting projects that reflect our distinctive character as government consultants working for public impact (and nothing else). We use consulting methods and deep knowledge of government to deliver:

  • strategy and policy
  • organisational performance
  • service delivery design
  • buying better from external consultants.

Situated within the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, we work in partnership with APS agencies on a wide range of high-profile issues that make a real difference to the wellbeing of Australians.

Our project teams also help to shape AGC – and reshape the APS.

Working at AGC

Our team is committed to public service and dedicated to maximising impact by working collaboratively and pursuing excellence. We are pioneering a different way of working – a unique APS style of strategic management consulting.

We will also be holding virtual information sessions for prospective candidates, see here for details.

Our offer to you

At AGC, we offer:

  • The opportunity to develop rapidly by solving problems in small teams of talented peers and senior public servants. (AGC also offers formal learning and development – on top of the opportunities available to every PM&C employee.)
  • The opportunity to work on fast-paced projects across a wide range of APS portfolios and functions, using your consulting skills to deliver public value.
  • A chance to shape and lead the future of the Australian Government’s in-house consulting function.
  • Generous and flexible conditions, including 15.4% superannuation in addition to base salary, allowances, salary sacrifice, study assistance, shut down leave, and relocation assistance for those outside of Canberra.

What you’ll be doing

We are looking for exceptionally talented management consultants who are inspired by our mission to deliver public impact. You will lead high-performing teams to deliver management consultancy projects for Australian Public Service clients.

As a Project Director at AGC, you will:

  • Form part of the AGC Leadership Team to guide the strategic direction of AGC and offer coaching, mentoring and support to build a positive work environment.
  • Lead the delivery of high-quality consulting projects that meet client needs, with a focus on providing strategic advice or building high-performing government agencies.
  • Develop and refine AGC’s service offers and methodologies, build AGC’s capability and contribute innovative ideas to drive AGC forward.
  • Guide your team in applying structured problem-solving techniques to policy and organisational challenges, skilfully engaging stakeholders, analysing data and producing meaningful advice.

Why you’re the ideal candidate

Our ideal candidate will perform at the level in accordance with the PM&C Performance model and will bring:

  • Substantial experience in a consulting services environment that aligns with strategy, policy, organisational transformation, service delivery design and buying better service offerings.
  • Experience leading teams to plan, manage and deliver complex consulting projects.
  • A passion for making a difference and challenging the status-quo.
  • The ability to think critically and bring a strategic and innovative mind-set to identify and solve problems.
  • The ability to communicate effectively and convincingly with internal and external audiences, including senior leaders.
  • Flexibility and resilience to deliver results and manage expectations in ambiguous and sometimes high-pressure work environments.

Flexibility arrangements

At PM&C we recognise the broad benefits of offering flexibility in how, when and where work is performed. We consider flexibility first from a starting position of ‘how can we make this work?’ and consider individual circumstances and operational requirements in making genuine attempts to establish mutually beneficial arrangements. Please reach out to the contact officer if you would like to explore what flexibility might look like for you, such as part time work, variable start and finish times or working from home.

Eligibility

  • To be eligible for this position you must be an Australian Citizen.
  • The occupant must be able to obtain and maintain a Baseline Vetting (Protected) level security clearance, or hold a current security clearance of an appropriate level.
  • The successful candidate will be required to be assessed through our pre-employment screening checks, such as an Australian Criminal History Check
