Job Description
Fully Funded PhD Position for Fall 2025 at the University of Tartu!
I’m seeking a dedicated PhD student to join the Software Engineering Group at the University of Tartu—Estonia’s top-ranked university.
🔹 PhD Project Start: Fall 2025
🔹 Project Spotlight
The project topic is "Boosting the Development of Energy-Efficient, Human-Centric AI Solutions", supervised by Assistant Prof. Hina Anwar.
This Ph.D. thesis aims to develop ECOMod, a prediction and recommendation system to estimate the energy consumption of AI solutions at an early stage. By leveraging AI energy benchmark datasets, ECOMod will predict energy usage across various use cases and provide actionable recommendations for optimizing AI models to balance energy efficiency with runtime performance.
The core contribution of this PhD project will be:
• A comprehensive dataset linking AI solutions' characteristics (e.g., architecture, configurations) to energy consumption metrics.
• A model (ECOMod) that estimates and predicts the energy consumption of AI solutions (tailored to specific use cases and hardware setups).
• An incorporated recommendation component for balancing energy efficiency with runtime performance, facilitating informed decisions while developing AI solutions.
This work directly supports global sustainability goals and aligns with EU regulations on responsible AI.
To ensure real-world applicability, the system will be refined and specialized for specific use cases. Use cases within the project can be adjusted based on candidates' interests and skills, e.g., mobility (🚘), healthcare (🩺), quantum computing (💻), or other cutting-edge domains.
