Android Software Engineer

About the Role
As an Android Software Engineer in NETGEAR’s new Center of Excellence in Cork, you will play a pivotal role in transforming NETGEAR’s Android app, used by thousands of customers globally. This is an exciting opportunity to take part in the complete overhaul of our Android app, focusing on delivering new subscription services and enhancing our user experience.
We need an experienced Android developer who is passionate about working with modern Android technologies and frameworks to build scalable, high-performance solutions. You’ll help shape the architectural direction of the app, suggest improvements, and lead technical decision-making while working in an Agile environment. As a hybrid role, you will work from the Cork office at least two days a week, combining in-person collaboration with the flexibility of remote work. Your contributions will be key in driving NETGEAR’s transition to a software-driven model.
Responsibilities
- Drive technical decisions and architecture: You will have a significant influence on the architectural direction of NETGEAR’s Android app, working with Kotlin, Jetpack Compose, and other modern Android technologies.
- Implement modern best practices: Champion best practices such as unit testing, code reviews, and CI/CD automation to maintain high standards of quality and performance.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams: Work closely with cloud and embedded systems teams to ensure seamless integration between the mobile app and NETGEAR’s hardware devices, creating a unified user experience.
- Architect and develop scalable features: Build features that are optimized for performance and scalability, ensuring the app serves millions of users globally.
- Continuous improvement: Take part in code reviews, improve development workflows through automation, and actively contribute to evolving our software engineering processes.
Qualifications
5+ years of experience in Android development, with expertise in Kotlin.
Required Skills
- Strong experience with Android architectural patterns such as MVVM or MVI.
- Hands-on experience with Jetpack Compose and other modern Android libraries.
- Proven experience working with RESTful APIs and integrating mobile apps with backend services.
- Experience with CI/CD tools, including GitHub Actions or Jenkins, to streamline development and deployment.
- Deep understanding of UX/UI principles and the ability to collaborate with designers to create intuitive, user-friendly interfaces.
- Experience with unit testing, instrumentation tests, and end-to-end testing.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to lead technical discussions.
- B.Sc. in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience.
Desired Skills
- Experience building mobile apps for IoT products or networking devices such as routers, mesh systems, or smart home hubs.
- Knowledge of Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and how hardware communication protocols impact mobile apps.
- Experience in DevOps practices, including automation and performance optimization in mobile app development.
