Octopus Energy Engineering 🛠️ – Product /

Full-time /

Hybrid

We’re a leading energy technology (EnTech) company, providing a better experience for our customers through transparency, honesty and simplicity. Better for the planet, through real long-term investment in renewable generation and a low CO2 future.

We're on a mission to make energy greener, fairer, and genuinely better for people. Our global energy revolution is backed by Generation, the sustainable fund co-chaired by Al Gore. To succeed with this mission, we need excellent technical people who want to use their skills on the biggest challenge the planet is facing.

We’re proud to be Europe's best-funded green tech start-up, and one of Glassdoor's Best Places to Work. We’re also the most awarded energy supplier in the UK, and have been Which? Recommended eight years in a row.

What will you be doing?

Octopus Energy Engineering is responsible for the sites, services, and tariffs that are used by the millions of Octopus Energy customers worldwide. From building the latest, cutting-edge time-of-use tariffs, to helping customers actually enjoy tasks like providing meter readings through our wheel of fortune - and everything in between.

You’ll find a wide variety of challenges in the work we do as we help push the energy revolution forward. Our teams are multi-disciplined and collaborate between countries, meaning you have what you need to get the right people together and build the next great thing.

We are looking for a Product Manager to join OE Engineering and support our OE Backend team.

The OE Backend team is a relatively new team of backend developers working on a new backend codebase to be used by all our global Octopus Energy teams. The team's responsibilities include:

  • Working with global Octopus Energy Engineering teams to promote and enable the development of full-stack features using the Octopus Energy Backend.
  • Migrating existing Octopus Energy-specific features from other repositories to the Octopus Energy Backend.
  • Collaborating with multiple teams and reaching a common understanding.
  • Develop features with scalability in mind to ensure seamless adoption across all Octopus Energy regions. This involves gathering requirements from each region and defining a unified core solution that meets the needs of all eight regions.
  • Provide backend support to other teams to assist them in achieving their goals as needed.
  • Define the technical requirements for dependencies on other teams and clearly communicate the priority of these requests to Client Delivery teams.

We embrace flat hierarchies and an open, agile culture that fosters innovation, flexibility, and creativity.

We don’t hang our personalities up with our coats and nor should you. At Octopus, we hire great people who get stuff done, all whilst being themselves.

What You'll Have...

  • Real care for our customers
  • Experience taking problems, rather than strict guidelines, and developing strong solutions
  • Ability to communicate effectively with backend engineers about system architecture, and performance optimisation
  • Recognise what needs to be done, and, just as importantly, what doesn’t need to be done right now
  • The ability to spin many plates and content switch between competing demands
  • A drive to collaborate and reach common understanding
  • Comfort proactively reaching out to multiple teams
  • Familiarity with back-end engineering concepts
  • The ability to make decisions quickly
  • Confidence tackling large-scale tasks individually
  • An empathetic approach to delegating work and collaborating with others
  • Love for being the glue

Our stack...

  • Asana
  • Miro
  • Figma
  • Python-based development framework
  • Database management
  • API design (GraphQL, REST)

Handy, but not essiential...

  • Previous experience in a fast-paced environment
  • Previous experience in the energy industry

Whoever you are, if you like one of our jobs, we encourage you to apply as you might just be the candidate we hire. Across Octopus, we're looking for genuinely decent people who are honest and empathetic. Our people are our strongest asset and the unique skills and perspectives people bring to the team are the driving force of our success.
