Principal Data Analyst

We are currently seeking a highly skilled Principal Data Analyst to join a dynamic team within a Queensland Government Department. In this role, you will lead the maintenance, development, and implementation of various business intelligence and performance reporting systems. Your work will focus on critical data sets related to employment, small business, and vocational education and training (VET), supporting strategic decision-making within the department.

As a senior member of the Data and Analytics team, you will bring your expertise in contemporary data collection, management, and analysis technologies to deliver actionable insights. You will collaborate with both internal and external stakeholders, coaching and mentoring team members while overseeing the creation of data processing and reporting products that help drive the department's strategic objectives.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide high-level strategic advice to senior management and stakeholders regarding data collection, management, and analysis.
  • Lead the processing, extraction, analysis, and presentation of both internal and external organisational data in a cloud-based environment.
  • Prioritise business requirements in collaboration with leadership and team members.
  • Develop innovative cloud-based business intelligence solutions to make departmental data accessible and user-friendly for distribution.
  • Implement best practice procedures to ensure that data processing and reporting outputs meet quality standards and deadlines.
  • Supervise and coordinate team activities in data extraction, analysis, and reporting.
  • Lead data governance activities, evaluating and updating processes to maintain data integrity and reporting quality.

Skills and Experience:

  • Well-developed knowledge of the strategic goals and values of the organisation and the ability to develop business intelligence tools and performance systems aligned with these goals.
  • Extensive experience in the processing, extraction, analysis, and presentation of complex data within cloud-based environments.
  • Proven ability to manage teams focused on data collection, analysis, and reporting within tight timelines.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to present technical information to various audiences and collaborate effectively.
  • Experience with Microsoft Fabric in a cloud environment is highly regarded.

Team & Department Overview: The Data and Analytics unit plays a pivotal role in the collection, management, and analysis of data across the department, focusing on key areas like employment, small business, and vocational training. The team works collaboratively, leveraging technologies like Azure data lake, Synapse, SQL, and Power Platform, and plays an essential role in supporting strategic policy and decision-making.
