Description
Amazon is looking for a passionate, talented, and inventive Applied Scientist to join the EU Selection Discovery team. As an Applied Scientist, you will invent, build and deploy state of the art machine-learning models and systems to enable and enhance the team's mission—real world incarnations of some of the most difficult academic problems.
An Applied Scientist in the team drives innovation through data-driven insights building advanced data pipelines and applying machine learning techniques such as computer vision, LLM and foundation models. An Applied Scientist also owns a science agenda for highly-impactful projects in the team, that require to design, implement and deliver solutions for scientifically-complex problems in production, while influencing multiple teams with his technical expertise, identify and devise new solutions for the complex challenges, where the problem was ambiguous, and propose two-way door approaches to the problems, and move quickly on implementation while maintaining high standards.
You will work with the largest online retail search application in the world, both in terms of users, catalogue size, and computing resources, and your work will directly impact millions of our customers. You will collaborate with recognized experts in science and engineering to develop novel algorithms and modelling techniques. You will partner closely with our engineering teams, present your work to product and engineering teams at Amazon, publish scientific papers and apply for patents for your inventions.

To do that we leverage and develop computer vision techniques, AI agents, prediction models and rely on foundation models.

Key job responsibilities
- Work on research projects in machine learning and related fields to create highly innovative customer experiences;
- Analyze large amounts of data to discover patterns, find opportunities, and develop highly innovative, scalable algorithms to seize these opportunities;
- Validate models via statistically rigorous experiments across millions of customers;
- Work closely with software engineering teams to build scalable prototypes for testing, and integrate successful models and algorithms in production systems at very large scale;
- Work side by side with fellow applied scientists and software engineers in the team.

Basic Qualifications
- PhD, or a Master's degree and experience in CS, CE, ML or related field
- Experience in building models for business application
- Experience in patents or publications at top-tier peer-reviewed conferences or journals
- Experience programming in Java, C++, Python or related language
- Experience in any of the following areas: algorithms and data structures, parsing, numerical optimization, data mining, parallel and distributed computing, high-performance computing
- Experience building machine learning models or developing algorithms for business application
- Experience using Unix/Linux
- Experience in professional software development
- Experience developing and implementing deep learning algorithms, particularly with respect to computer vision algorithms
- Experience in investigating, designing, prototyping, and delivering new and innovative system solutions
