About QByte Studios
QByte Studios is an independent game studio based in Victoria, Australia. We’re currently working on Nanites, a third-person action-builder survival game inspired by Fortnite: Save the World, Lethal Company, and Days Gone.
Set in a gritty, post-apocalyptic world overrun by rogue nanotech, Nanites blends story, base-building, combat, and survival strategy. We’re a small, passionate team that values fun, innovation, and high-quality work.
Role Overview
We’re looking for a Programmer to help bring Nanites to life. You’ll work closely with the design, art, and systems teams to implement gameplay mechanics, improve performance, and keep our codebase clean and scalable.
This is a contractor role with fully flexible hours and remote work—you can work from anywhere, anytime, as long as the work is strong and progress is consistent.
What you'll be doing
- Implement core gameplay systems in Unreal Engine 5
- Optimize game performance and ensure smooth multiplayer syncing
- Collaborate with designers and artists to bring features to life
- Debug and troubleshoot issues across platforms
- Set up modular and maintainable code architecture
- Help prototype new features and gameplay ideas
- Review code and provide feedback to junior programmers
What you'll be doing
- Proficient in C++ and/or Blueprints in Unreal Engine 5
- Solid grasp of game programming fundamentals (OOP, data structures, optimization)
- Experience with multiplayer or networked gameplay systems
- Strong problem-solving skills and debugging abilities
- Ability to work independently and communicate clearly
- Open to feedback, adaptable, and reliable
- Willing to sign a contractor agreement (currently being finalized)
Bonus
- Experience with AI, procedural systems, or save/load systems
- Familiarity with Perforce or version control
- Love for post-apocalyptic, sci-fi, or survival games
- Worked on other indie or mod projects
- Enjoy building systems that scale well over time
Industry Transparency
We understand concerns about unpaid work in the game industry and are committed to fairness and transparency:
- All contributors are independent contractors.
- We currently do not generate revenue, but contributors will be compensated based on the net revenue-sharing model once revenue is generated.
Interview Process
We don’t do stiff interviews we jump in-game and talk while playing. Usually in Fortnite (BR or STW), though this may vary.
We want to see how you:
- Collaborate and communicate under pressure
- Handle challenges and problem-solving
- Bring a sense of humor and vibe with the team
- Adapt and help out when needed
Why join us?
- Real experience on a unique indie project
- Build a solid portfolio for future work
- Work from anywhere on your schedule
- Be part of something ambitious and different
- Actually ship a game with a tight, motivated team
How to apply
Quick apply or email [email protected] with:
- A portfolio (GitHub, YouTube demos, Google Drive, etc.)
- A short intro about you and why this project speaks to you
- Your experience, timezone, and availability
