Senior Backend Developer (High-Performance E-Commerce Platform, On-Site/hybrid in Haarlem)

About the Role

We are seeking a Senior Backend Developer to join our team on-site in Haarlem. You will work on a high-performance e-commerce platform during a critical transition phase: migrating from a fully custom order and subscription management system to Commercetools.

Where Commercetools provides functionality out-of-the-box, we will leverage it directly; where our business model demands more, we will design and build custom microservices to extend Commercetools.

You will work extensively with .NET Core 8, Azure, and modern architectural patterns like microservices, CQRS, and DDD. This role requires senior-level technical judgment, strong execution skills, and excellent communication.

Responsibilities

• Design and develop backend services using C# (.NET Core 8) in a microservices architecture, integrated into Azure.

• Lead technical design for migrating business-critical functionality from custom systems into Commercetools, using Commercetools where possible and building custom services where required.

• Implement and maintain CQRS and DDD patterns, ensuring a scalable and maintainable service landscape.

• Utilize RabbitMQ for asynchronous messaging between distributed services.

• Optimize and manage SQL Server databases, ensuring performance and reliability.

• Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines with Azure DevOps for robust, automated deployments.

• Architect and develop custom extensions to Commercetools for handling specific business requirements such as complex logistics, payment flows, invoicing, and recurring order management.

• Troubleshoot and optimize existing systems, identifying bottlenecks and proposing technical improvements.

• Collaborate across teams (product, front-end, operations) to ensure successful project delivery.

• Maintain high standards of code quality and documentation, conducting peer reviews and mentoring colleagues where appropriate.

Requirements

• 5+ years of professional backend development experience, preferably in e-commerce or SaaS environments.

• Strong expertise in .NET Core (experience with .NET 6/7/8 essential).

• Proven experience with Azure cloud hosting and services (App Services, SQL Database, Functions, etc.).

• Solid understanding and application of microservices architecture, CQRS, and DDD in production environments.

• Strong hands-on experience with RabbitMQ or similar message brokers.

• Good understanding of SQL Server and Elasticsearch, db design, query optimization, and database tuning.

• Pre:

Real-world experience with Commercetools or other headless commerce platforms, especially in building custom extensions.

• Deep knowledge of e-commerce domain processes — order management, logistics, payment processing, invoicing, recurring subscriptions.

• Strong communicator, capable of translating technical decisions clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

• Pragmatic mindset: focuses on solutions that balance business needs with long-term maintainability.
