Internship in Energy Systems Modelling and Computational optimization
INTERNSHIP 2025 NTNU - Dept. Industrial Economics and Technology Management
Position(s) for paid internship(s) for the summer 2025 in the Department of Industrial Economics and Technology Management at NTNU. The position(s) will be within the domain of energy or power systems modelling, mathematical programming, optimization models or operations research, and/or computer science.
Job Description and Responsibilities:
There are internship position(s) with possibilities of developing into a master's thesis in the following semesters. There is a range of case studies in energy system modelling projects, power system analysis for countries in Europe and Africa, energy transition analyses for the North Sea area, and others as potential specific topic of the internship . The final project will be defined together with the supervising team and based on the applicant competences. Through projects with external institutions and NTNU, the internship provides hands-on experience in applying operations research and data analytics to real-world challenges in sustainable energy, fostering skills in teamwork, scientific communication, and innovative problem-solving in the context of the energy transition.
Below are the desired skills and responsibilities. Experience in at least one or two of them will be important to carry on a successful internship:
• Implementation of optimisation models (e.g. LP, MILP, SP)
• Collaboration on developing energy systems models with external partners (e.g, SINTEF)
• Program interfaces for Python models
• Implementation of artificial intelligence solutions
• Python Programming skills.
• Knowledge and experience with stochastic programming. is beneficial
• Knowledge about the electricity market or power systems
Requirements:
• Skill in at least one of the mentioned skills above
• Excellent teamwork and communication skills
• English proficiency
• Working Place (in-Person): NTNU main campus, Trondheim, Norway
• Internship length: 2.5 to 3 months (start around June 2025)
