Director of Software Engineering, Embedded
Location: Sydney,NSW
$220,000 - 240,000 + Super - DOE
A leading-edge tech organisation is preparing for the next stage of innovation in real-time data capture and is looking for a Director of Software Engineering who can drive software architecture and team leadership for its airborne sensor systems.
This position will lead the development of mission-critical software that powers a sophisticated platform integrating embedded firmware, onboard computing, multi-sensor coordination, and autonomous operation. It’s ideal for a hands-on technical leader with a background in real-time, embedded, or robotic systems, who thrives on scaling both complex software and high-performing teams.
What You'll Be Driving
- End-to-end software ownership for advanced sensor systems: from architecture through in-field deployment.
Design and development of:
- Embedded firmware (C/C++, STM32 or similar) for sensor control and hardware interfacing.
- Onboard processing pipelines for real-time data (imagery, GPS/INS, telemetry).
- System health monitoring, data logging, and fail-safe mechanisms for field reliability.
- Flight management logic, including autonomous capture routines and state machines.
- Pilot/operator UI tools, likely using cross-platform frameworks such as Qt/C++.
- Networked systems across heterogeneous onboard devices (CAN, serial, Ethernet).
- Oversight of agile delivery, automated testing (unit/integration), and CI/CD pipelines for production-grade deployments.
- Interface with hardware teams to define interfaces, timing constraints, and physical integration boundaries.
- Collaborate on intelligent edge capabilities such as onboard AI/ML inference, sensor fusion, or adaptive capture logic.
Your Background Might Include
- 10+ years in systems-level or embedded software engineering; 5+ in technical leadership roles.
- Strong expertise in C++, with deep knowledge of memory management, threading, and performance optimization.
- Solid understanding of real-time constraints, data buses, and hardware-software co-design.
- Experience shipping production-grade software in high-reliability environments (e.g., aerospace, robotics, automotive, IoT).
- Comfortable architecting across Linux and RTOS environments, with low-level hardware debugging skills.
- Track record of building and scaling engineering teams while maintaining strong technical foundations.
