Software Engineer

Within the Environmental Intelligence unit, about 350 motivated employees are committed to monitoring our ‘Planetary Boundaries’ and ‘Human Boundaries’. Together, we work on monitoring, researching and analysing our environment (land, climate, air, water ...) and our health.

For our Compentence Center Software & Services, we are looking for a motivated Software Engineer for the expansion of the team. Our ideal candidate is a swiss army knife in regards to software engineering and likes to work on a variety of scientific topics within the VITO project portfolio.

Your responsibilities:

• You will have a contributing role in our projects.
• You write clean, efficient, and well-documented code under the supervision of senior developers.
• You participate in coding tasks for new features, bug fixes, and system enhancements.
• You follow coding standards and best practices set by the team.
• You seek guidance from senior developers to improve coding practices and problem-solving skills.
• You stay updated on new technologies and industry trends to improve skills and knowledge.
• You participate in testing activities to ensure code quality.
• You document code, processes, and technical specifications to ensure clarity and maintainability.

As a software engineer, you:

• Have a passion for IT in its broad sense
• Have your first experience into developing software and/or database models.
• Are familiar with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript for front-end development.
• Understand back-end development concepts (REST APIs)
• Have experience with version control systems like Git.
• Are eager to learn new technologies, tools, and programming languages
• Share an interest in our open source technology stack:

> React.JS, Typescript, Angular, HTML/CSS

> C++, Java, Python, Ruby On Rails

> PostgreSQL, MariaDB, SQLite

> GIT, Jenkins, Docker

• Have awareness of CI/CD pipelines and tools.
• Understand the Agile practices like Scrum or Kanban
• Have a plus if you have experience in AI and ML
• Have a plus if you have experience in virtualization, cloud environments or high performance super computing
• Have an interest in science and research projects.
