AI:AT – the AI Factory Austria – is making Austria a hotspot for Artificial Intelligence in Europe.

The AI Factory Austria (AI:AT) is a joint project of AIT and Advanced Computing Austria. It combines cutting-edge expertise in high-performance computing, artificial intelligence and data ecosystems, creating an interdisciplinary innovation environment for research, development, start-ups and industrial projects. AI Factory Austria provides access to state-of-the-art AI infrastructure, promotes trustworthy AI and ethical standards, and is a hub for networking with national and European partners. The aim is to develop forward-looking AI technologies and viable AI solutions together with partners from industry and public institutions and to put them into practice.

As part of the collaboration within the AI Factory Austria, the Austrian Institute of Technology will delegate experts to the AI Factory Austria.

For our location in Vienna, we are seeking a:

AI:AT - AI Factory Austria

Architecture & Design

  • Design and concept of distributed data and metadata platforms (object store, lakehouse, data catalog)
  • Select, integrate and enhance modern open-source technologies (e.g. Apache Iceberg/Delta Lake, Kafka/Redpanda)
  • Integrate with dataspaces from different domains (using e.g. Gaia-X, EDC, SIMPL)

Implementation & Automation

  • Develop microservices and APIs (Python, Go or Java/Kotlin)
  • Build and operate ETL/orchestration workflows (Airflow, Argo, Prefect)

Data Quality & Trust

  • Implement automated data-profiling, bias-detection and ML-metric pipelines
  • Realise security & compliance controls (GDPR, EU AI Act) incl. Data-Space-Connector (GAIA-X/EOSC)

Operations & Scaling

  • Set up CI/CD pipelines, monitoring (Prometheus/Grafana) and performance-tuning on HPC/cloud infrastructure (OpenStack + Kubernetes)

Collaboration & Documentation

  • Work closely with HPC, ML and legal/governance teams as well as external partners
  • Contribute to open-source projects; create user and developer documentation
  • Provide trainings and tutorials

Your Qualifications

  • Degree in Computer Science, Data Engineering or comparable professional experience
  • Strong programming skills in at least one modern language (Python, Go, Java/Kotlin)
  • In-depth knowledge of distributed storage systems, data formats (Parquet, ORC, Iceberg/Delta) and streaming tech
  • Proven experience with container/cloud stacks (Docker, Kubernetes, Helm) and Infrastructure-as-Code
  • Good grasp of data governance and security mechanisms (OAuth2/OIDC, Keycloak); hands-on Data-Space experience is a plus
  • Nice to have: expertise in HPC/AI workloads, MLOps frameworks (MLflow, Kubeflow) or observability stacks
  • Excellent command of English (German a plus), strong team spirit and a passion for building new solutions
  • You should be eligible for working in Austria.

  • The gross annual salary starts at EUR 59.934,-- as a minimum according to the non-university collective agreement. The actual total salary package is determined individually according to your qualifications and experience.
  • The position is funded by the AI Factory Austria until June 2028. An extension beyond this period may be possible depending on future project developments.
