KONE Technology and Innovation (KTI) is where the magic happens at KONE. It's where we combine the physical world – escalators and elevators – with smart and connected digital systems. We are changing and improving the way billions of people move within buildings every day. We are on a mission to shape the future of the industry with new technologies and sustainable innovations.

We are looking for a

Principal Data Engineer

to join the KONE IT Enterprise Data & Analytics team in Espoo, Finland.

Our team is building Data Foundation - a new way of working with data using modern cloud technologies. It is a key enabler in KONE’s digital transformation, empowering scalable analytics, AI, and digital use cases across the organization. Data products are central to generating business value, and efficient engineering practices ensure their reusability and maintainability.

As Principal Data Engineer, you will lead the design, development, and industrialization of robust data pipelines and products. You’ll take a hands-on role in building complex solutions, guide technical direction for data product teams, and drive adoption of best practices and innovations at scale.

You’ll translate data needs into technical solutions, ensure quality through proper development practices, and help define common engineering standards. As a subject matter expert, you’ll also mentor others, lead capability development, and contribute to internal and external forums. The role includes people management responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and implement scalable, production-grade data pipelines in cross-functional teams.
  • Ensure pipelines follow architectural principles, best practices, and meet quality standards.
  • Promote reusability and lean design patterns across teams; manage technical debt proactively.
  • Support production operations, troubleshoot issues, and identify areas for continuous improvement.
  • Contribute to capability development, stakeholder engagement, and represent KONE in forums.
  • Lead and mentor a team of Data Engineers.

What We’re Looking For

  • Master’s or PhD in computer science, software engineering, statistics, or a related field.
  • 10+ years of experience in data and software engineering, with strong hands-on skills.
  • Proven ability to build and maintain cloud-based data products and pipelines.
  • Strong coding skills (Python, SQL, Scala) and experience with modern DevSecOps/DataOps.
  • Expertise in tools like Databricks, Airflow, DBT, AWS Glue, EMR, Athena, Spark, Kafka, Flink, Terraform.
  • Knowledge of cybersecurity, data privacy, compliance, and cost optimization (FinOps).
  • Experience working with complex enterprise systems (e.g., SAP ERP, Salesforce, MES, IoT).
  • Strong communication, documentation, and team collaboration skills.
  • Leadership experience, including mentoring and team development.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English language, and strong facilitation and communication skills.

What We Value

We’re looking for a proactive team player who is eager to grow, share knowledge, and solve problems. You should enjoy collaboration, be open to stepping out of your comfort zone, and be motivated by continuous learning and team success.
