ML Researcher (Kotlin)

The JetBrains Research team explores ways to use machine learning techniques and agentic approaches to help developers and enhance software development processes. Our work aims to improve the state of ML for code by turning the latest academic advances into practical applications.

Our team is seeking a researcher to work on the development and fine-tuning of Kotlin language models. This includes the full cycle of model development: data collection and augmentation, training, fine-tuning, and evaluation. You can familiarize yourself with our work in this field by reviewing our technical report. We are seeking a strong ML generalist interested in low-resource languages and code modeling.

In this role, you will:

• Fine-tune and train neural networks for Kotlin source code processing.
• Develop the machine learning pipeline for a Kotlin domain, including data collection, data filtration, and evaluation.
• Develop and apply new methods to improve Kotlin code generation and completion.
• Contribute to open-source projects.

We’ll be happy to have you on our team if you:

• Have strong experience in natural language processing or code modeling.
• Have a track record of publications in top-tier ML conferences and journals or a track record of completed ML projects in an industry setting.
• Have strong programming skills.

We’ll be especially thrilled if you:

• Have hands-on experience with Kotlin or another JVM-based language.
• Have worked on retrieval-augmented generation, extending models to handle large context windows or with AI agents.
