The Optimization of Machine Learning Systems Group, under the direction of Prof. A. Lucchi at the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, University of Basel, invites applications for several PhD positions in the areas of optimization for machine learning and the theory of deep learning. Research topics will include the development of adaptive optimization methods, investigation of loss landscapes in deep neural networks, and the design of novel neural network architectures to improve efficiency in training and inference.
Requirements
– Master’s degree in mathematics, theoretical physics, or computer science with a strong theoretical background
– Outstanding academic record and solid mathematical foundation
– Research Experience Is Advantageous But Not Required
– Excellent communication skills and fluency in English (spoken and written)
– Motivation to work in an interdisciplinary and international research environment

Responsibilities
– Conduct research in applied mathematics and computer science
– Prepare research articles and present findings at leading international conferences (e.g., ICML, NeurIPS, ICLR)
