About the Opportunity
For one of our clients, we are looking for a Senior Backend Java Developer to join their team.
Our client is developing cutting-edge matching software that applies advanced AI techniques to connect people with opportunities in a more intelligent and transparent way. By using technologies such as Natural Language Processing (NLP), ontologies, and Large Language Models (LLMs), the platform understands context, interprets language, and delivers relevant matches - even when data is incomplete or inconsistent.
As a Senior Backend Java Developer, you'll help build and evolve the core architecture behind this technology. You'll work in a focused, technically driven environment where quality, ownership, and autonomy are central to how the team operates.

Your Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain backend systems and APIs
• Collaborate on system architecture and high-level technical decisions
• Integrate diverse data sources and configure matching logic
• Contribute to performance tuning, testing, and deployment pipelines
• Navigate and improve a complex, production-level codebase
• Proactively address technical challenges and suggest architectural improvements

Tech Environment

• Java 11 (with migration to Java 17 underway)
• REST APIs
• Docker & Ansible for automation
• Elasticsearch for indexing and semantic search
• Emphasis on clean, maintainable, and secure code
• Complex, non-standard architecture - ideal for curious engineers who enjoy tackling tough problems

Your Profile

• At least 5 years of experience in backend Java development
• Proven ability to work with and design scalable system architectures
• Strong problem-solving skills and adaptability in complex environments
• Genuine interest in AI-driven technologies and data-intensive systems
• Independent mindset with a high standard for code quality and security
• Fluent in Dutch and English

Bonus Skills

• Experience with Docker and/or Elasticsearch
• Familiarity with tools like Maven, Jenkins, or Ansible
• Understanding of LLMs or interest in GPU-based computing

Working Setup
The client offers a hybrid work model with one on-site day per week in Belgium. There is also flexibility for extended remote work, including working from abroad.
