We are looking for a motivated Data Scientist with strong R programming and statistical skills to join our multidisciplinary team of scientists, data scientists, and lab technicians. In this role, you will contribute to the development of advanced data analysis tools and R packages that support our mission of enabling animal-free testing in life sciences.
As part of our Data Science team, you’ll work on diverse datasets, support the implementation of robust statistical workflows and development of the proprietary Vivaltes herbal platform. You’ll also collaborate closely with lab experts and clients to turn data into actionable insights. This is an exciting opportunity for someone with a solid background in R who’s eager to grow in a dynamic biotech environment.
§ Develop and maintain R packages for statistical analysis of lab-based experiments.
§ Design and implement statistical and machine learning models to support research and internal applications.
§ Document code, providing support and explanation of any code base to internal users
§ Retrieve, process, and integrate external data sources via public APIs and online biomedical databases.
§ Perform -omics data analysis in collaboration with researchers and clients.
§ Contribute to quality control and code reviews within the Data Science team.
§ Communicate findings and progress with colleagues across different disciplines.
§ Provide basic technical support to colleagues when issues arise (R bugs, computer issues, etc.)
§ Assist with various other technical tasks as needed, such as creation of user accounts, server maintenance, etc.
§ R programming (2+ years) – proficient in scripting, data wrangling, and package development.
§ Strong understanding of statistics and/or machine learning methods.
§ Familiarity with Git version control.
§ Some familiarity with online database access / APIs for data retrieval is a plus.
§ Basic experience in Python (1+ year) is a plus.
§ Experience with omics data, ontologies, or life sciences applications is a plus.
§ MSc in Bioinformatics, Data Science, Statistics, or a related field.
§ Strong analytical and problem-solving mindset.
§ Academic and critical thinking
§ Detail-oriented and consistent coding practices.
§ Good communication skills and a collaborative spirit.
§ Fluent in English (working language is English).
§ Based in the Netherlands with EU citizenship or valid work authorization.
§ A year contract of 32-40 hours per week (with possibility of extension)

Vivaltes is a niche biotechnology company that offers both data science solutions as well as laboratory research to reduce, refine and replace animal testing. We partner with academic institutions and industrial partners and also work directly with (inter)national customers.
The offices of Vivaltes are located in Bunnik, at 10 minutes cycling distance from the Science Park in Utrecht and at 5 minutes walking distance of Bunnik train station. Our team consists of mainly young professionals, who enjoy playing board games at lunch together and organize monthly parties, and about 50% of our employees have a PhD or are working towards one.
