Freelance Network Architect – SD-WAN (Cisco Viptela)
Location: Flexible across Europe – Preferred cities include; Paris, Madrid, Barcelona, Lisbon, Brussels, Berchem, Cologne
Work Type: Hybrid – 2 days/week onsite
Contract: 3-month rolling contract with 1-month notice
Start Date: 01/07/2025
Role Overview
We are seeking an experienced Network Architect to join a critical SD-WAN remediation initiative, focusing on transitioning a Cisco network managed by a telco provider into a more secure and optimized architecture. This is a strategic role where strong architectural leadership is valued over hands-on operational tasks, though occasional implementation may be required.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the remediation of the existing Cisco SD-WAN network with a focus on security and scalability.
- Architect end-to-end solutions using Cisco Viptela; provide direction and best practices for LAN and WAN integration across branch locations.
- Collaborate with internal teams and external partners to align network design with business and security objectives.
- Provide architecture-level oversight of LAN connectivity at branch sites and ensure sufficient knowledge of datacenter integration (without being a DC-focused ACI expert).
- Contribute to the transformation of the global access network product within an international enterprise environment.
- Occasionally support hands-on implementation in exceptional circumstances.
Required Skills & Experience
- Proven expertise with Cisco Viptela SD-WAN (mandatory). Candidates with strong backgrounds in other enterprise SD-WAN solutions (e.g., Aruba, VeloCloud) may be considered if highly skilled.
- Solid understanding of LAN/WAN architecture, branch network design, and datacenter connectivity.
- Previous experience in transitioning from managed services to in-house network architecture is a plus.
- No formal certifications are required, but deep practical knowledge is essential.
- Must be able to drive network transformation from an architectural standpoint—not just technically competent, but strategically aware.
- Comfortable operating with low oversight and making independent decisions that align with broader business objectives.
Interview Process
- Initial interview with the hiring manager (focus on mindset, soft skills, and general technical understanding).
- Technical interview with team members to assess depth of SD-WAN expertise and solution architecture thinking.
