Site Reliability Engineer (SRE) - Remote/Hybrid working – UK

Salary: £85-90k basic + 10% bonus + exceptional benefits


My client, a London based Publishing House, are leaders specialising in the most iconic digital platforms, magazines and newspapers with tens of millions of monthly readers and are ranked in the top Inclusive Employers for 2023.


They are looking for an experienced Site Reliability Engineer (SRE) to join their growing Product Development team. This team is responsible for the design, development and maintenance of their award-winning technology business suite of contextual publishing and AdTech tools.


This is a remote/hybrid position and are open to candidates based across the UK. They can be flexible, however they would expect the incumbent to travel to HQ in London approximately once or twice a month.

Job Description

You will be working within the product development team enhancing and improving their current systems and building the next generation of services and products.

As SRE, you will play a key role in designing, implementing, monitoring and maintaining their platforms.


Specifically, you will


  • be responsible for cloud infrastructure and the services they deploy, ensuring that they are reliable, scalable and efficient.
  • use automation and observability tools to monitor the infrastructure, services and APIs, creating dashboards and alerts as needed to assess the health and identify issues.
  • respond to alerts and incidents to identify the causes and create and implement plans to rectify in a timely manner.
  • configure system scaling to ensure performance, availability and cost optimization, and create and run load testing scenarios to better predict platform infrastructure requirements.
  • help to manage the software release processes, ensuring that all deployed changes are documented, well tested and monitored to avoid or identify faults and regressions.
  • create and run ad hoc jobs (such as batch data processing) as needed by the team and customers.
  • collaborate with the development and product teams to design product infrastructure architectures.
  • keep up to date on best practices and trends in cloud service engineering and be a subject matter expert for the wider team


Your skills and experience will include


  • We are looking for an engineer with extensive experience in SRE roles.
  • Deploying and managing complex AWS cloud hosted services, including ECS/Fargate, Lambda and step functions, Event Bridge, MSK, SQS, SNS, S3, RDS, Opensearch, Elasticache, Cloudfront
  • Understanding of networking principles and protocols (TCP/IP, HTTP, DNS, etc.), CDNs, Load balancers and VPCs, Regions and Availability Zones.
  • Expertise in implementing and using monitoring and logging tools, including Cloudwatch
  • Comprehensive experience of AWS CDK with TypeScript is essential
  • Excellent programming skills, with ability to create, understand and debug complex codebases (for both applications and infrastructure as code)
  • Experience with build and deployment tools and CI/CD platforms
  • Use of Docker containerization technologies and orchestration tools
  • A focus on security and managing roles and service permissions
  • Familiarity with Automation Test frameworks
  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills, with the ability to analyse and resolve complex technical issues
  • Good communication and collaboration skills to work effectively with cross-functional teams
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment
