SteerAISimulation Engineer - Autonomous Robotics

About SteerAI

SteerAI is an autonomous mobility technology company powered by VentureOne, the commercialization arm of the Advanced Technology Research Council. SteerAI’s advanced AI-powered autonomy stack, developed by the Technology Innovation Institute, empowers the logistics and defense industries by turning industrial vehicles into autonomous powerhouses that can handle complex off-road missions, transforming operations and protecting organizations' most important assets: Their workforce.

Role Overview

We’re looking for a hands-on and proactive Simulation Engineer to lead the development of high-fidelity, modular simulation environments that accelerate the testing and deployment of autonomous ground vehicles. You’ll collaborate closely with autonomy, perception, and integration teams to translate real-world behavior into scalable virtual testbeds and help shape the future of our simulation-first validation pipeline.

This is a unique opportunity to build cutting-edge systems from the ground up at a frontier robotics startup backed by world-class R&D and venture leadership.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain a modular simulation platform for autonomous mobile robotics.
  • Design realistic digital twins of robots, environments, and scenarios for testing.
  • Run and analyze Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) and Software-in-the-Loop (SIL) simulations.
  • Work closely with autonomy teams to test, iterate, and validate perception and control algorithms.
  • Integrate simulation environments with game engines and robotic middleware (ROS2, Gazebo).
  • Optimize simulation performance for faster iteration, scalability, and fidelity.
  • Support CI/CD testing pipelines for simulated testing and regression tracking.
  • Document test plans, simulation workflows, and usage guidelines for internal stakeholders.
  • Contribute to the design and execution of simulation experiments to evaluate system robustness.

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of experience in simulation, robotics, or game development.
  • Strong programming skills in C++, Python, or C#, with adherence to software best practices.
  • Familiarity with ROS1/2, Gazebo, Rviz, and Linux development environments.
  • Experience with Docker, Git, and modern DevOps workflows.
  • Understanding of robotic components—sensors, actuators, control systems, and dynamics.
  • Hands-on experience building 3D models or simulation worlds.
  • Proficient in debugging and optimizing complex, multi-threaded systems.
  • Comfortable collaborating cross-functionally in fast-paced environments.
  • Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD in Computer Science, Robotics, Engineering, or related field.

Bonus Points

  • Experience with Unreal Engine, Unity, Carla, Autoware, or V-REP.
  • Knowledge of vehicle dynamics modeling and sensor simulation.
  • Exposure to CI/CD for robotics and experience with Serial Communications (e.g., CAN, Ethernet).
  • Passion for autonomous systems and continuous learning.
