Head of Machine Learning and AI

Gusto is seeking a strategic Head of Machine Learning and AI to lead a newly created function within their Data team. This leadership role involves working with senior Product, Engineering, and Design stakeholders to build better customer experiences and improve operations by aligning ML/AI use cases with organizational goals. The role reports to the Head of Data and collaborates with cross-functional platform teams to ensure scalable and robust ML/AI initiatives. Responsibilities include leading and mentoring Applied ML/AI and Risk Data Science teams, defining and executing ML/AI strategy, overseeing model design and deployment, partnering with stakeholders to identify ML/AI opportunities, driving best practices in model development, advocating for responsible AI usage, establishing KPIs, managing resources and budgets, and staying current with AI advancements. Candidates should have 8+ years of leadership experience in applied machine learning, AI, or data science, strong expertise in ML techniques and software engineering, excellent leadership and communication skills, strategic thinking, knowledge of MLOps, and a passion for ethical AI. Experience in risk modeling, regulated environments, fintech, or risk management is a plus. The role supports a hybrid work model with office presence expected 2-3 days per week in Denver, San Francisco, or New York City.
