Senior Backend Engineer - Fulfillment Network Capacities B2B

Zalando fulfills more than a hundred million customer orders every year and volumes are increasing. The Fulfillment Core business unit within Zalando builds and operates systems that are at the core of Zalando’s platform strategy and ensure timely, efficient, and correct delivery of every one of our customers’ 185+ million orders every year.

As a Senior Backend Engineer in the Fulfillment Network team, you will build the Fulfillment Network Platform, which is the digital representation of Zalando’s European logistic network. The Network is the single source of truth for several key capabilities of Fulfillment Core, such as fulfillment planning and delivery time predictions. In this team, you’d enable the creation and usage of these properties and automate and improve the accuracy of network capacity demand forecasting with the mission to improve customer experience and fulfillment efficiency.

The team’s tech stack consists of Kotlin and Typescript for the backend microservices, with a focus on Kotlin going forward. We use Postgres for databases, Nakadi for event processing and deploying microservices in AWS on the Kubernetes platform. For observability, the team works with Grafana, Lightstep, and Scalyr.


WHAT WE’D LOVE YOU TO DO (AND LOVE DOING)

• Build, own and operate in production critical components for the Fulfillment Network by contributing to designing and implementing RESTful APIs, data models and microservice architecture.
• Ensure scalable observability and robust data management, and help us figure out how we best scale our platform in an increasingly complex ecosystem.
• Contribute to wider platform strategy as a senior team member working together with principal engineers.
• Embrace collaboration between engineering and the product by working with cross-functional teams across different locations to drive forward large customer-facing project initiatives.
• Contribute to engineering best practices of Zalando’s wider engineering community.
  
  
  

WE’D LOVE TO MEET YOU IF

• Solid production experience with a JVM based language like Java or Kotlin and corresponding frameworks.
• Experience with other technologies we use, such as AWS, Postgres, and a tailored version of Kafka.
• You are motivated by the idea of building systems in the wider context of a complex distributed system at scale using REST APIs and event based asynchronous communication as well as operating them resiliently.
• Interest or experience in building software platforms and understanding how to think about them in a holistic way.
• You take ownership to turn ideas into action, collaborate well across teams and sites, and communicate your ideas clearly.
