About the Role

This position sits between the web application teams and the database administration teams, managing and supporting a wide range of applications and services, many built on Progress OpenEdge and running on Apache Tomcat, Kafka, and other core technologies. The environment includes approximately 60 servers, with a focus on reliability, performance, and security.

The key responsibilities include managing SSL/TLS certificates, handling server configuration and monitoring, and troubleshooting application-related issues. This role suits a technically-minded professional with an analytical approach and years of real-world experience, rather than someone early in their career or seeking constant exposure to new frameworks.

Key Responsibilities

Web & Application Administration

• Act as the primary administrator for Apache HTTPD, Tomcat, and Kafka in a production environment.
• Own the full lifecycle of SSL/TLS certificates, including renewals, full chain configuration, and diagnosing handshake issues.
• Troubleshoot and resolve web service issues by reading logs, identifying root causes, and implementing fixes.
• Work closely with internal infrastructure, database, and application teams to maintain and support custom-built business applications.

Monitoring & Reporting

• Assist with migrating monitoring from legacy systems to OpenTelemetry endpoints feeding into Grafana.
• Help configure dashboards and alerts to improve visibility of web application health and performance.

Support & Collaboration

• Serve as the connective tissue between database teams (particularly around Progress OpenEdge) and application developers.
• Provide administration support and oversight for internal web-based tools related to warehouse and logistics operations.
• Maintain documentation for configurations, cert management, and troubleshooting procedures.

What We're Looking For

• Extensive experience (ideally 10+ years) in IT infrastructure or web application support.
• Deep knowledge of Apache HTTP Server, Tomcat, and TLS/SSL management.
• Strong troubleshooting skills and ability to resolve technical issues independently.
• Familiarity with or willingness to learn Progress OpenEdge and how it fits into web-based business applications.
• Experience with Linux and Windows environments.
• Understanding of Kafka, web proxies, and log-based debugging.
• Basic scripting skills in Bash, PowerShell, YAML, or Ansible are helpful but not mandatory.
• Someone who values stability, reliability, and real-world impact over fast-moving tech trends.
