Internship Overview

The Efficacy Lab, inside of the AI team, pushes the boundaries of personalized education through machine learning and experimentation.

Building on our existing Deep Knowledge Tracing model, which estimates mastery levels to make personalized content recommendations, you’ll enhance the model by integrating LLM-based tokenization of text features. By connecting the DKT model to an LLM API, we aim to model richer, contextual representations of user interactions and content.

What will you do as an Efficacy Lab intern?

• Model integration: Connect our production-grade DKT model with an external LLM API (e.g. OpenAI, Anthropic) to tokenize and encode textual features.
• Feature engineering: Design and test text-based embeddings for learning materials, user interactions, videos, explanations, etc.
• Proof of Concept (PoC): Implement the end-to-end pipeline (feature ingestion, DKT+LLM fusion, evaluation) in the real world on the StudyGo platform.
• Research: Survey state-of-the-art LLM + knowledge tracing techniques. Example references:
• Deep Knowledge Tracing (Piech et al., 2015)
• XGBoost-Based Knowledge Tracing (Su et al., 2023)
• Experiment design: Propose and implement evaluation strategies (A/B test, retrospective), including mastery-level and recommendation-quality metrics.
• Collaboration: Work cross-functionally with content specialists, UX designers, and backend engineers to embed your PoC into the platform.
• Analysis & reporting: Evaluate outcomes, draw insights, and recommend enhancements or scaling paths.
  
  

You bring

• Background in Machine Learning, (Behavioural) Data Science, AI, Computer Science, or related field
• A strong statistical background
• Experience with Python (e.g. PyTorch, TensorFlow, XGBoost)
• Strong analytical and innovative mindset, ability to work both independently and in teams
• Understanding of sequence models, knowledge tracing (e.g., DKT), and evaluation metrics is a plus
• Familiarity with LLMs and embedding APIs is a plus
• Excellent communication skills in English
