The Department of Computer Science, Faculty of Science, University of Helsinki, invites applications for a Doctoral Researcher position in Algorithms and Computational Biology. The successful candidate will join the research group of University Lecturer Leena Salmela and contribute to the project “Structural correctness in metagenomics assembly,” funded by the Research Council of Finland. The appointment is full-time and will commence in September 2025, or as agreed, with a maximum duration of four years and an initial six-month trial period.
Position Description
The Doctoral Researcher will focus on developing models, algorithms, and data structures for high throughput sequencing data, with particular emphasis on genome assembly. The project aims to address the challenge of estimating the correctness of genome and metagenome assemblies, and to design novel computational methods for accurate assessment and analysis of sequencing data. The research group is part of the Algorithmic Bioinformatics lab at the University of Helsinki.
Requirements
– A Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Computer Science, Bioinformatics, Mathematics, Data Science, or a related field
– Strong background in algorithms and data structures
– Interest in computational biology and genome analysis
– Good programming skills
– Proficiency in English, both written and spoken
