Data Engineer / Project Lead

For our client, we are currently looking for a Data Engineer / Project Lead

THE CLIENT

Our client is a tech-bio startup that develops cutting-edge AI methods in genome, protein and large language models to accelerate drug discovery and translational medicine. Due to their rapid growth they are looking to expand their Data/AI Engineering team Basel, Zurich and Lausanne.

YOUR ROLE:

As Data Engineer you will design and scale the infrastructure and pipelines powering the clients domain-specific Large Language Models (LLMs) and ML-driven research platforms in immunology, biotechnology, and drug discovery.

You’ll play a critical role in building robust, scalable, and cloud-native data systems to support AI that enables scientific reasoning by ingestion, processing, testing, and deployment of high-quality data structures. Your work will directly support model training, evaluation, and real-time inference in production systems used by researchers, scientists, and engineers.

YOUR TASKS:

Data Infrastructure & Pipeline Development

• Build and maintain scalable, cloud-based data pipelines for structured and unstructured data.
• Support LLM training through reproducible, high-quality data workflows.
• Design modular ETL/ELT systems for batch and streaming ingestion.
• Develop LLMOps/MLOps workflows for training, deployment, and monitoring.

Cloud Architecture

• Deploy and manage infrastructure on AWS, Azure, or Databricks.
• Optimize compute/storage using tools like S3, Delta Lake, Spark, or Dask.

CI/CD & Testing

• Create CI/CD pipelines for data workflows with automated testing and validation.
• Ensure production readiness with robust monitoring, fault tolerance, and data quality checks.

Quality & Data Governance

• Apply QA best practices across data engineering.
• Collaborate with ML and software teams to integrate data into models and products.
• Maintain documentation, data governance, and version control.
• Coordinate with external partners on integrations and project delivery.

REQUIREMENTS:

• B.S. or M.S. in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field.
• Practical experience with building cloud-based, production-grade data pipelines.
• Languages & Frameworks: Python (Pandas, PyTorch), SQL, Airflow or similar workflow tools
• Experience with cloud providers such as Azure, AWS and Databricks
• Familiar with structured and semi-structured data; experience with Delta Lake, Snowflake, Redshift or similar
• Proficient in CI/CD using GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, Jenkins or other DevOps tooling for automated testing and deployment of data pipelines.
• Data validation & testing with tools like Great Expectations or PyTest)
