POSITION PURPOSE
Reporting to the Director of Creative Strategy and Operations, the Web Developer is a full-stack developer who acts as the primary technical steward for Whitman College’s digital platforms. This role guides the continuous improvement of the College's Ingeniux CMS and provides front-end support for the Technolutions Slate CRM. This position is critical in supporting the College's student recruitment and fundraising goals by ensuring a seamless and engaging digital experience for prospective students and donors. Supporting the supervisor, the developer serves as a technical partner, translating institutional goals into robust, user-centric, and accessible digital experiences for a variety of campus partners.

This position is critical in supporting the College's student recruitment and fundraising goals by ensuring a seamless and engaging digital experience for prospective students and donors. Supporting the supervisor, the developer serves as a technical partner, translating institutional goals into robust, user-centric, and accessible digital experiences for a variety of campus partners.
Principal Accountabilities
Ingeniux CMS Architecture & Platform Management (35%)
- Serve as the architect and developer for the Ingeniux CMS, managing the whitman.edu codebase with Git and responsible for developing and maintaining pages, components, content types, and schemas using HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and ASP.NET MVC.
- Manage and optimize content publishing workflows and, in partnership with the supervisor, liaise with WCTS and the Ingeniux vendor on platform security, performance, support, upgrades, and integrations.
- Ensure all public-facing web properties adhere to Whitman's visual brand standards and meet or exceed federal, state and industry standards using WCAG accessibility guidelines.
- Serve as a technical consultant on content strategy, web standards, and digital best practices, while guiding the evolution of the website’s information architecture with digital best practices.
- Advise campus partners on content-related issues; reorganize, add to, and edit content across the website as needed to enhance user experience and achieve strategic goals.
- Implement and manage technical Search Engine Optimization (SEO) strategies to improve the College's organic search rankings and online visibility.
- Serve as the technical resource for the Technolutions Slate CRM, providing guidance and front-end development support to the Admission and Development departments.
- In collaboration with departmental stakeholders, build and maintain custom solutions including applicant portals, inquiry forms, event registrations, and branded HTML email templates.
- Develop and maintain branded communication assets within Slate, including HTML email templates and dynamic content, to support recruitment and fundraising campaigns.
- In collaboration with the supervisor, coordinate web-based projects from discovery through deployment, aligning technical work with departmental and institutional strategic priorities.
- Recruit, train, and supervise student workers on web-related tasks, and develop and deliver training for campus partners on the Ingeniux platform.
- Utilize analytics and optimization platforms (e.g., Google Analytics, Acquia Optimize) to monitor and report on website performance, accessibility, and quality assurance.
- Advance the College's digital efforts by researching emerging technologies, engaging in ongoing professional development, and contributing to other communications projects and initiatives as needed.
Must be able to explain and/or demonstrate possession of the knowledge, skills, and abilities to safely perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation. Specifically,
- Advanced-level proficiency in front-end web development, including HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript (ES6+), and HTML email development.
- Demonstrated experience with at least one server-side programming language (e.g., C#, PHP, Python, Java), with a professional proficiency in C# and the ASP.NET MVC framework strongly preferred.
- Strong understanding of responsive design principles and front-end frameworks (e.g., Bootstrap, Tailwind).
- Deep knowledge of enterprise Content Management System (CMS) architecture, administration, and development. Experience with CRM platforms is also beneficial.
- Thorough understanding of web accessibility standards (WCAG 2.1) and a proven ability to build accessible websites.
- Proficiency with version control systems, particularly Git.
- Familiarity with web analytics and data visualization tools (e.g., Google Analytics, Google Looker Studio) and the principles of SEO.
- Excellent project coordination, organizational, and time-management skills, with the ability to manage multiple competing priorities.
- Exceptional problem-solving skills and a keen attention to detail.
- Superb communication and interpersonal skills, with a demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with both technical and non-technical colleagues.
- Ability to actively and positively contribute to the College’s core values of diversity, equity, inclusion, antiracism, and access.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Web Development, or a related field.
- 3+ of professional experience in full-stack web development and experience working with content management systems.
- OR a combination of relevant education, training, and experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Direct development and administrative experience with Ingeniux CMS and Technolutions Slate CRM.
- Experience working in a higher education environment.
- Proficiency in translating designs from tools like Figma or Adobe XD into functional code and using Adobe Creative Suite to create and optimize web assets.
- A demonstrated record of implementing technical SEO strategies that result in improved search performance.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- This position is eligible to work up to 40% remote in accordance with Whitman College's hybrid work agreement.
