About the role
The Lead Python Developer will oversee the design, development, and implementation of end-to-end data science solutions within the Microsoft Azure and Data Fabric environment. This role will involve management of Developers within a multi-disciplinary team (approximately 25% leadership and 75% hands-on software development), liaising with stakeholders, providing technical advice and guidance, and leading work to develop data modelling and forecasting solutions.
Key responsibilities
- Provide technical leadership to the Python development team, including workload allocation, code reviews, and ensuring adherence to standards and best practices for maintainable, scalable, reliable, and high-quality code.
- Understand the product planning lifecycle and provide technical advice on the size and complexity of deliverables to inform effort estimations and contribute to the management of product backlog.
- Lead the development and implementation of robust Python-based solutions for efficient data processing and transformation of large datasets from ADLS and Databricks, ensuring data quality and readiness for model development.
- Oversee and guide the design, implementation, and training of machine learning models using relevant Python libraries to address complex business problems.
- Ensure that all development efforts align with the overall Indigo and data platform architecture and contribute to a scalable and robust solution.
- Applicants located outside of Canberra will be required to travel to Canberra for operational reasons as directed (e.g. onboarding, planning exercises [1-2 times per quarter], in person training, etc.). Any required travel will be discussed in advance and notice given wherever practicable.
Highly desirable criteria
- Deep understanding and practical experience with core Python, its web frameworks (e.g., Django, Flask, FastAPI), and key data science libraries (e.g., Pandas, NumPy, scikit-learn).
- Demonstrated expertise in building, training, evaluating, and deploying machine learning models using frameworks such as scikit-learn, TensorFlow, PyTorch, or similar, with a strong understanding of model optimisation and performance tuning.
- Evidenced experience and qualifications as a Python Development Lead, with proven ability to manage and mentor a development team.
- Detailed understanding of the data science lifecycle, from data exploration and preprocessing to model deployment and monitoring.
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills, able to translate business requirements into technical solutions with keen attention to detail.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the proven ability to anticipate stakeholder needs and expectations across a geographically dispersed network.
Desirable criteria
- Familiarity with DevOps practices and CI/CD pipelines.
- Experience with at least one model deployment framework or service (e.g., Databricks Model Serving, Azure Machine Learning).
- Experience with cloud platforms (e.g. AWS, Azure, GCP) is advantageous.
- Tertiary qualifications in a relevant discipline (e.g. Computer Science, Data Science, Statistics, Engineering).
