The Bank for International Settlements (BIS) is hiring for a Data and AI Engineer.

This role is based in Basel, Switzerland however, thanks to our status as an international organization, we can hire globally and welcome applications from candidates of all nationalities and located anywhere in the world. Relocation support is available for the successful candidate and their dependent family members.

Purpose Of The Role

As a Data & AI Engineer in the General Secretariat Office, you will play a key role in designing, developing, and deploying solutions that enhance efficiency, automation, and decision-making across corporate services. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams and leverage AI and lean six sigma techniques to drive impactful transformation initiatives.

Principal Accountabilities

  • Support data engineering and integration: Develop robust data pipelines to ingest, clean, and transform structured and unstructured data. Integrate data from multiple sources (e.g., ERP, CRM, workflow tools) to create unified datasets that enable process performance analysis.
  • Contribute to process analysis and optimisation: Work with business analysts to understand current processes and identify opportunities for improvement. Participate in process mining activities to uncover inefficiencies, bottlenecks, and automation potential.
  • Assist in AI and automation initiatives: Build and test AI applications to enhance process efficiency. Deploy AI-driven solutions using tools such as Python, Azure ML, or cloud-native platforms.
  • Develop tooling and dashboards: Create compelling dashboards and visual analytics using tools like Power BI and Tableau. Provide data insights to support continuous improvement initiatives and monitor transformation KPIs.
  • Collaborate and document: Partner with senior transformation managers, IT teams, and business units to ensure technical solutions align with organisational needs. Document models, workflows, and technical processes to promote transparency and scalability.

Qualifications, Skills, And Experience

  • A degree in Computer Science, Data Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, or a related field, or the equivalent gained through professional experience.
  • Early career hands on experience (including internships or academic projects) in data engineering, analytics, or AI/ML.
  • A basic understanding of machine learning lifecycles and AI principles.
  • A strong interest in developing lean six sigma competencies to an advanced level.
  • Familiarity with Python, SQL, data pipeline tools, and Azure AI services (an asset).
