Designs, supports, coordinates, controls, and operates internal data or specialized components of a network, including Local Area Networks (LANs) and Wireless Networks (WLANs). Responsibilities include planning, configuring, testing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and optimizing network infrastructure such as routers, switches, and security devices. Provides leadership and guidance to less experienced team members.
Essential Job Functions
- Leads and coordinates the maintenance of complex network hardware and systems; investigates and resolves significant network and hardware issues; researches, analyzes, isolates, and resolves errors; updates legacy networks as needed in line with strategic plans.
- Provides technical leadership for internal and/or external customers; responds to technical inquiries and recommends approved solutions.
- Oversees network problem escalation and resolution processes.
- Designs, installs, and maintains network infrastructure, including hardware, software, and system data for networks of varying sizes. Installs network applications on servers and related equipment; conducts testing, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
- Determines appropriate testing routines or scripts; may test various equipment such as routers, switches, and network security devices.
- Designs and maintains LAN and WLAN systems in accordance with specified requirements. Prepares network diagrams and documentation to communicate current operational status.
- Performs or directs configuration changes to enhance network performance, including adjustments to routers, switches, and security devices.
- Provides mentorship and technical guidance to junior personnel.
- Prepares detailed proposal documentation to meet customer requirements, including cost analyses and vendor comparisons to ensure efficient and cost-effective operations.
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Degree in engineering, computer science, management information systems, or a related field preferred
- Seven or more years of experience in data or video networks
- Experience with LAN systems and technical infrastructure communication
- Subject matter expertise in network systems, principles, and technologies
- Experience with network software and hardware
- Familiarity with multiple technical platforms (e.g., two-tiered and three-tiered client-server architectures)
- Ability to pass a government security clearance/background check
