About the Role:

The Content Ops team categorizes and labels all kinds of content: posts, topics, you name it. This is critical in serving our users the best experiences, so we can align our content with their interests and intents as much as possible. The team needs a strong backend engineer who is able to devise, design, and implement robust and scalable systems to support our growing content classification needs. The successful candidate is a driven self-starter with an eye for automation and optimization. The ideal candidate is also well-versed in LLMs: prompt engineering, scripting jobs, retrieval-augmented generation, and automated data processing.

Key Responsibilities

• Automation: designing and implementing systems to automate manual processes, with clear error handling, observability, and fallback mechanisms.
• Optimized Content Classification: integrating LLMs to parse through terabytes of content, classifying it, and refining over multiple rounds of processing.
• Systems Architecture: We need automation solutions that will stand the test of time within the broader Reddit ecosystem and can be used for future classification and refinement work.

What You’ll Do:

• Work cross-functionally, collaborate and partner with product and other engineering counterparts to execute on product and business strategy and build novel products.
• Contribute to the full development cycle: technical design, development, test, experimentation, analysis, and launch. You’ll be reviewing code and design docs, giving feedback on product specs.
• Contribute to standards that improve developer workflows, recommend best practices
• Continuously learn and improve your technical and non-technical abilities.
• Create and maintain APIs, tests, and middleware to facilitate data flow between systems
• Perform system analysis, troubleshooting, and debugging to identify and resolve integration issues
• Ensure compliance with security protocols and data privacy regulations during integration processes
• Troubleshoot and optimize application performance to provide optimal experience
• Ability to design maintainable database schemas and easy-to-understand data structures
• Ability to design technical solutions with little direction or guidance
• Engage in the team's organizational processes, such as planning, backlog refinement, and sprint reviews, to ensure effective collaboration and feedback
• Proactively identify and address potential technical issues and bottlenecks

Qualifications for this role:

• Minimum 8+ years of post-internship, full-time, hands-on, professional software development experience developing distributed backend systems at scale.
• Expertise in Python, and ideally Golang as well
• Experience with distributed systems, microservices architecture, and handling high-throughput workloads
• Experience with GraphQL, REST, HTTP, and the ability to design maintainable APIs
• Experience with message queues (Kafka, RabbitMQ), caching systems (Redis, Memcached), and database technologies (SQL and NoSQL)
• Familiarity with software engineering best practices such as unit/integration/end-to-end testing, design documents, CI/CD, A/B testing, code reviews, and documentation
• Strong organizational skills, the ability to prioritize tasks and keep projects on schedule.
• Excellent communication skills. You collaborate effectively with teams in a fully remote environment and discuss complex topics with technical and non-technical audiences.
• BS degree in Computer Science, a similar technical field of study or equivalent practical, professional, hands-on experience.

• Bonus: experience with LLMs, RAG, and/or general ML systems.
