Why your role matters
As a Senior Linux Systems Engineer at i3D.net, you’ll play a key role in running and evolving the Linux infrastructure that powers both our global hosting platform and our internal services. We’re a bare-metal-first company, but we also run virtual machines, containerized workloads, and Kubernetes clusters.
You’ll work across legacy and modern systems: tuning performance, managing storage, building automation, and gradually replacing older infrastructure with maintainable, scalable solutions. Whether it’s internal build systems, customer-facing compute, or distributed storage: your expertise keeps it all running smoothly.
What you will be doing
- Run Linux at Scale: Design, deploy, and maintain Linux systems across bare-metal, virtualized, and containerized environments.
- Engineer Storage Solutions: Build and support fast, resilient storage using Ceph, VAST or other technologies, supporting both internal tools and global workloads.
- Support Mixed Workloads: Operate a diverse estate that includes high-performance bare-metal servers, traditional VMs, modern Kubernetes clusters, and container-optimized platforms.
- Modernize Infrastructure: Identify legacy bottlenecks and refactor them into automated, secure, and observable systems using Infrastructure as Code methodologies and tools like Ansible and Terraform.
- Debug Deep Issues: Solve complex performance and stability problems across OS, hardware, and platform layers.
- Improve Observability & Security: Strengthen monitoring with Prometheus/Grafana and apply hardened configurations, secrets management, and access control.
- Support Internal Stakeholders: Provide reliable infrastructure for internal product teams, CI pipelines, and platform tooling.
- Mentor & Document: Guide peers, contribute to documentation, and foster a culture of continuous development, best practices evolution and personal growth across the team.
Tech stack
At i3D.net, you’ll work with:
- Languages: Golang (primary), PHP (legacy)
- Infrastructure: Debian, Docker, Kubernetes, Ansible, AWX, Terraform, Github pipelines and runners, ArgoCD
- Storage: Ceph, VAST
- Observability: Nagios, Prometheus, LibreNMS,
- Hardware: Juniper, Dell, Supermicro, HPe, Redfish protocol, OpenManage
- Data & Databases: MariaDB, Postgres, Redis/Keydb, Opensearch, Graylog
- Practices: CI/CD pipelines, Agile methodologies, SRE mindset and resilience-based engineering - we follow a "you build it, you deploy it, you maintain it" philosophy
What success looks like in the first year
- You've stabilized and improved core Linux systems across bare metal, VMs, and Kubernetes systems sustainably as part of a product team
- Legacy infrastructure has been either sustainably modernized or safely decommissioned
- Internal services run more reliably, with fewer manual interventions and clearer ownership.
- You’ve made storage setups more scalable and resilient.
- The team benefits from your documentation, mentorship, and deep technical expertise.
About you
- Linux Pro: 4+ years managing Linux systems in bare-metal and hybrid environments. You understand performance tuning, system internals, and hardware-level interactions.
- Storage & Compute: Hands-on experience with storage technologies like Ceph, VAST, S3-like object storage, Block storage (NFS / NVMe over TCP) and virtualization platforms like VMware and Proxmox.
- Modernization Mindset: Comfortable modernizing in legacy environments - and improving them through sustainable automation, structure, and observability.
- Automation-First: Fluent in Ansible and Terraform. You build reproducible, clean configurations that scale.
- VMs and Containers: Confident managing virtual machines, containers, and Kubernetes clusters necessary for a system or application
- Troubleshooting Expert: Skilled at diagnosing tough issues across hardware, network, OS, and middleware. You understand how systems interact with each other using APIs
- Security & Monitoring: You’ve implemented secure configurations and built resilience into pipelines for large distributed systems.
- Collaborative: You mentor others, share knowledge openly, and enjoy working in a high-trust team environment.
- Hybrid set-up & Location: This is a hybrid role based in Rotterdam. We're in the office two days a week, so we're looking for someone already living in the Netherlands.
