Position: Senior Embedded Engineer

Location: Ireland (Hybrid with remote flexibility)

Type: Full-time | Permanent


Role Summary:

The Senior Embedded Engineer will lead the embedded firmware development lifecycle from concept through to launch. This role involves working closely with cross-functional teams and ensuring compliance with relevant medical and cybersecurity standards. The engineer will report directly to the Head of Technology.


Key Responsibilities:

Firmware Development

  • Design, develop, and optimize embedded firmware for medical devices
  • Ensure performance, reliability, and regulatory compliance

System Integration

  • Collaborate with hardware, software, and mechanical teams for smooth integration
  • Develop drivers and communication protocols for interfacing with various peripherals

Requirements Analysis

  • Translate system-level requirements into detailed firmware specifications
  • Participate in architecture and design decisions

Testing & Validation

  • Write and execute unit, integration, and system-level tests
  • Ensure compliance with standards (e.g., IEC 62304, FDA regulations)

Documentation & Compliance

  • Generate and maintain design documentation, test protocols, and user manuals
  • Ensure adherence to medical device regulatory and quality standards


Requirements:


Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field
  • 5+ years of embedded firmware development experience (medical device experience preferred)


Technical Skills

  • Strong proficiency in embedded C/C++ and RTOS-based systems
  • Experience with ARM Cortex microcontrollers/processors
  • Solid knowledge of SPI, I2C, UART, USB, Bluetooth
  • Experience with debugging tools such as JTAG, oscilloscopes, logic analysers
  • Knowledge of cybersecurity principles for embedded systems
  • Familiarity with scripting languages (e.g., Python, MATLAB)
  • Awareness of machine learning on embedded platforms (desirable)


Regulatory Knowledge

  • Familiarity with IEC 62304, ISO 13485, FDA 21 CFR Part 820
  • Understanding of quality systems and design controls for regulated industries


Soft Skills:

  • Excellent communication and collaboration abilities
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving mindset
  • Detail-oriented with excellent documentation skills
  • Ability to thrive in cross-functional and dynamic teams


Additional Experience (Preferred):

  • 3–5+ years in project or technical team leadership
  • Experience across the full product development lifecycle
  • Exposure to Agile/Scrum methodologies


Working Conditions:

  • Hybrid work model with both remote and office options, ideally office focused
  • Occasional travel may be required (e.g., team meetings, partner visits)
