Python Backend Developer – AI Scale-up in Amsterdam

Build the backend infrastructure of a fast-growing AI platform. As Backend Developer, you’ll design scalable APIs, integrate LLM workflows, and power real-time interactions, all in a lean, product-focused engineering team.

Our client is a fast-growing SaaS scale-up based in the Netherlands, backed by solid funding and used by a wide range of European customers. Their platform combines automation, AI and clean user experience, fully built and maintained in-house.

You’ll join a tight-knit engineering team with real ownership over architecture, code quality, and delivery. No endless tickets or middle management, just smart, structured people building scalable systems that go live fast.

The culture is technical, pragmatic and collaborative. The team works mainly on site, with short decision lines and lots of room for initiative.

What you’ll do

• Build and maintain Python backends using FastAPI or Flask
• Design clean APIs that support AI logic, data processing and workflows
• Support real-time interactions through Redis and WebSockets
• Improve performance, code quality, testing and security
• Collaborate closely with frontend, product and other engineers
• Contribute to architectural choices, monitoring and deployment

What we’re looking for

• 5+ years of experience in backend development (Python)
• Solid understanding of API design, scalability and clean architecture
• Familiar with Redis, Docker, CI/CD, GitHub Actions or similar tooling
• Fluent in English (Dutch is a plus)
• Based in the Netherlands with valid EU work permit (required)

Who you are

Experienced – 5+ years in backend roles, ideally with 3+ in fast-paced SaaS or product environments

Python Native – You’re fluent in Python and want to keep building in that ecosystem

AI-Comfortable – You use AI tools in your workflow (e.g. Copilot, Claude) and are excited to ship features powered by LLMs

Technically Broad – You understand more than just code: APIs, architecture, security, databases, CI/CD and testing are part of your toolbox

Product-Focused – You care about what you build and how it impacts real users
