What You'll Be Doing

The Unaccredited Trainees in General Medicine provide expert medical care to inpatients and outpatients of the General Medicine departments. This position has been welcomed to address the increased demand for General Medicine expertise in Western Sydney. Terms available include Acute Geriatrics and Acute General medicine. Other terms may be considered by negotiation such as Rehabilitation, Community Term, Orthogeriatrics and Geriatric Evaluation and Management (GEM) unit.

They practice under the supervision and direction of Specialist Medical Practitioner. Training will extend acute medicine skills and develop with high exposure in general medicine in a supportive, clinical setting with high exposure to complex, acute medical presentations.

The Unaccredited Trainee will participate in outpatient services in a variety of ambulatory care settings including hospital facilities and private consulting rooms. The role includes patient assessment, making treatment decisions, performing procedures and maintaining adequate medical records; and developing expertise in medical practice, in a complex clinical environment. This includes supervised general medical management of patients admitted to specialist departments.

Close and effective liaison with consultants will allow the doctor to demonstrate their level of ability and understanding of patient care and enable you to expand your areas of responsibility. All patients managed within the hospitals of the health service are under the direct care of a specialist medical practitioner. All decisions regarding their care are to be clearly communicated with the specialist responsible for that care.

The Unaccredited trainee in General Medicine is a key person who works closely with all members of staff and must:

  • Have the ability to exercise discretion, sensitivity and maintain confidentiality.

  • MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical board of Australia in an appropriate registration category.

  • Unaccredited communication skills, including the ability to convey, and adapt verbal and written information to a clinical and non-clinical audience
  • Unaccredited good organisational and time management skills and ability to manage competing priorities in a complex environment.
  • Demonstrated commitment to quality improvement, patient safety and risk management.
  • Unaccredited independent clinical skills and judgement, with the ability to make sound decisions and problem solve with an awareness of limitations and ability to learn independently and modify behaviour accordingly.
  • Previous experience in and willingness to deliver undergraduate and postgraduate medical education and training.
