Senior PHP Backend Engineer (Symfony) — Remote (Germany)

About the role

We are recruiting for a fast-growing activewear & nutrition e-commerce group. You will join a small, highly skilled engineering team and take ownership of backend systems that power customer experience across web, logistics and loyalty programs. This is a hands-on role: you will design and build APIs, scale integrations, and help shape backend architecture that directly impacts millions of customers.

What you will do

• Own backend API development for production services (Symfony, PHP).
• Design and implement integrations with external systems (ERP, WMS, payment providers) and internal workflows.
• Build and maintain the customer loyalty application and related services.
• Implement robust asynchronous processing (RabbitMQ or similar) and ensure reliable message flows.
• Work with CI/CD (GitHub Actions) and test-driven development to keep quality high.
• Collaborate closely with product, logistics and operations to translate business processes into technical solutions.
• Troubleshoot performance issues and optimise systems for peak events (promotions, sales).
• Mentor other engineers and help improve engineering practices.

Must-have skills & experience

• 5+ years professional experience building backend systems in PHP.
• Strong experience with Symfony (latest versions) or similar PHP frameworks.
• Solid API design skills (RESTful APIs, webhooks).
• Experience with messaging/queue systems (RabbitMQ, Kafka or equivalent).
• Practical experience with CI/CD (GitHub Actions or similar) and test-driven development.
• Comfortable owning end-to-end processes and working directly with non-technical stakeholders.
• German fluent (preferred) and English fluent. Remote work within Germany only.

Nice-to-have

• E-commerce experience (Shopify, Magento, WooCommerce) or integrations with ERPs/WMS.
• Experience with cloud infrastructure (DigitalOcean, AWS, CloudStack).
• Background in building customer loyalty or subscription systems.
• Contributions or public repos on GitHub demonstrating relevant work.

Compensation & benefits

• Salary range: €80,000 — €95,000 base (depending on experience).
• Fully remote within Germany with optional in-person meetups every ~6 weeks (travel expenses covered).

Interview process (typical)

1. 30-minute chemistry call with recruiter.
2. 60-minute technical deep-dive with engineering lead (practical discussion of past work and approach).
3. Final conversation with CTO / hiring manager.
4. Process is usually fast — often completed within one week for strong fits.
