Role Description

This is a contract to perm role for a Senior Frontend Developer at Switch. Someone who can lead the frontend development within a project team and is comfortable working in close collaboration with customers.


An effective collaborator you will be able to contribute directly on projects in a quick and efficient manner as well as working with less experienced members of your team to help increase both their quality and velocity. With a keen eye, attention to detail and a creative flair you are able to develop elegant solutions that bring to life the designer's vision. 


Main Duties & Responsibilities


  • Assist technical leads in identifying, defining and planning front-end project work.
  • Generate scalable and extendable templates and components from designs; into accurate front-end implementations which respect design & UX considerations and work across devices and browsers.
  • Solve complicated business problems through the application of best practice development patterns and principles.
  • Manage and resolve any front-end support incidents on production environments in a timely, effective and well-communicated manner.
  • Setup automated development procedures, ensuring developers have a working and clearly documented front-end development workflow for all projects.
  • Active monitoring of production environments to ensure they are running at optimal performance, taking initiative to identify potential problems before they occur.
  • Write and maintain technical documentation to enable other developers.
  • Teach and mentor other front-end developers; share your knowledge and skills with colleagues for mutual benefit.
  • Clearly articulate and delegate tasks to junior and mid-level developers effectively.
  • Organise and conduct pair programming sessions; perform code reviews of front-end code, enforcing code quality and standards amongst the team.
  • Conduct, contribute to and engage in team meetings.
  • Keep up to date with the latest techniques and trends within the industry in order to Identify and propose improvements to front-end related technologies, frameworks and solutions for the business and our customers.
  • Provide regular communication with their line manager and project team(s); reporting issues, concerns and feedback which may affect their ability to perform their job.


Qualifications

University Degree or TAFE level equivalent in a programming related field is desirable but not necessary. We value common sense as highly as any degree, so don’t be afraid of having a go.


Experience

  • 5 + years full-time experience as a front-end developer in a commercial environment; successfully implementing web development projects in complex, fast-moving environments, preferably for a digital agency.
  • 2 + years experience as the lead front-end developer on at least two major projects for the entire duration.
  • You have delivered multiple projects that are at a similar scale to, or greater than our current portfolio of work.
  • It is expected that you have an online portfolio showcasing process, deliverables and outcomes of previous projects. Your portfolio should contain links to live websites and examples of your work. If this is not possible, you must address this in your application to be considered.


Skills

Essential

  • Master of HTML & CSS
  • Expert knowledge of Javascript ES6
  • Expert integrating with API endpoints
  • Expert using next.js, or equivalent front-end framework
  • Expert using React.js
  • Expert at writing performant, scalable and reusable UI components
  • Proficient building on a headless CMS
  • Proficient with NodeJS and a package dependency management (NPM, Yarn)
  • Expert with javascript task-runners, build tools and bundlers (webpack)
  • Expert with version control systems (namely Git)
  • Power user of Visual Studio Code and the browsers built-in development tools
  • Expert knowledge and application of front-end performance optimisation techniques
  • Expert at planning and estimating front-end development work accurately
  • Proficient at writing technical documentation
  • Master understanding of cross-browser/device/email client intricacies
  • Proficient developing for WCAG AA standards or higher
  • Proficient at implementing SEO standards; including url structure, redirects, sitemaps, semantic markup, structured data, metadata etc
  • Proficient at implementing custom GA/GTM events to defined specifications


Desirable

  • Javascript object oriented programming
  • Developing for large enterprise-level CMS platforms such as Sitecore
  • Experience developing Retail and eCommerce solutions
  • Integrating front-end build tools into build pipelines which run on continuous integration environments
  • Familiar working in a Microsoft .NET environment
  • Experience with Storybook, Styleguidist or similar
  • Experience developing Progressive Web Apps, Service Workers & AMP
  • Experience with GraphQL
  • Experience using TypeScript
  • Experience developing code that works with common unit testing and e2e testing patterns such as Jest
  • Experience in A/B or multivariate testing
  • Familiar with SCRUM / Agile methodologies


Soft Skills

  • You have a good understanding of UX, UI principles and best practices.
  • You have meticulous attention to detail, in both the technical and visual aspects of the role.
  • You have a history of critical thinking, strong analytical skills and an ability to think logically with excellent problem solving skills.
  • You have great oral and written communication skills, because you know when everyone is on the same page, the project runs like clockwork.
  • You’re able to follow procedures and standards, but also be confident with introducing new ideas wherever you think improvements can be made.
  • You enjoy engaging and collaborating with the team to not only bond, but generate and evaluate ideas.
  • You have an eye for UX & Design, ensuring that your builds match the approved designs as close as possible.
  • You’re a fast learner who’s able to adapt to new environments and workflows.
  • You hold yourself and others to be constructive, respectful and inclusive during all interactions within the workplace.
  • You have great personal time management and organisational skills, you know how to prioritise your work and work to agreed deadlines.
  • You are able to work and troubleshoot autonomously.
  • You can handle conflict resolution between technical and non-technical personnel.


This position is based in our Sydney office at 100 Market Street, Sydney NSW 2000 and supports hybrid working.
