Your Opportunity
At U of T Mississauga, we are looking for an exceptional Network Administrator to join our Network Engineering team. Your primary duties include the installation, configuration, and maintenance of local area, wireless, and wide area networks. This includes monitoring network performance, identifying connectivity issues, and collaborating with senior staff on complex problems. The role involves the deployment and management of switches, routers, and wireless access points, as well as participating in network-related projects, upgrades, and rollout activities. Accurate maintenance of documentation and procedures is essential.
You will be part of a highly motivated and dynamic team supporting and maintaining the U of T Mississauga campus network. You will contribute to strategic and tactical planning, development of departmental network and telecommunications standards, and liaise with contractors, vendors, and internal staff. Your Responsibilities Will Include
- Conducting detailed analysis of system performance to inform management decision making
- Configuring virtual networks and virtual storage on multiple vendor specific platforms
- Analyzing and installing networking equipment
- Testing and configuring local area network equipment
- Updating network topology diagrams
- Documenting network-related activities or tasks
- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Minimum of three years of proven, hands-on experience supporting large, complex campus and data-centre networks.
- Cabling Infrastructure: familiarity with optical fibre types and connectors, various optical transceivers, copper cable types and connectors, cable termination methods, patch panels, cable-testing technologies, BIX systems, and structured cabling systems in general.
- Network Infrastructure Devices: experienced with large-capacity switches comprising an excess of 380 PoE interfaces, routers, hubs, wireless access points, repeaters, media converters, switch stack technologies and firmware upgrades.
- Core Networking Protocols: experienced with link aggregation, VLAN / VxLAN, variants of Spanning Tree, ARP, ICMP, 802.1X, DNS, DHCP, EVPN, TCP, IPv4, IPv6, BGP, OSPF, and other layer 1 to 4 network protocols.
- Network Infrastructure & Security: hands-on experience with software-defined networking (SDN) platforms such as Cisco ACI and Arista CloudVision. Proficient in command-line interfaces including Cisco IOS, NX-OS, and ArubaOS CLI. Experienced with network security solutions such as firewalls, NAT, SSL, VPNs, and proxy technologies.
- Network Automation and Operations Tools: experienced with UNIX, shell scripting, Python, Wireshark/tcpdump, version control, and automation tools (e.g. Ansible / Terraform).
- IT Service Management (ITSM): strong understanding of IT service management practices, particularly the ITILv4 framework, including Change Enablement, Incident Management, and Problem Management. Proficient in using enterprise ITSM and ticketing tools (e.g. ServiceNow).
- Frequent interaction with contractors, construction workers, vendors, Facilities and IT personnel.
- Ability to plan, schedule and coordinate small projects, and to follow-up on them on a daily basis, and ability to be detailed in the organization and management of equipment inventory.
- Ability to review and write technical documentation, create network diagrams and floor plans using diagramming applications (e.g. Draw.io / MS Visio). Ability to understand RFCs, standards, and complex technical concepts in general.
- Must communicate well both verbally and in writing. Must be able to explain technical concepts to non-technical personnel.
- Must have initiative and work both independently and as a team member.
- Strong commitment to high quality service and strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Strong time management skills to permit simultaneous action on many tasks, many of which will demand timely completion.
- Familiarity with BICSI recommended practices.
- Familiarity with wireless technologies, including 802.11 Wi-Fi standards, site surveys, RF analysis, and channel planning.
