Research Engineer – Affective Computing

Huawei Nederland
Netherlands · Full-time · Entry

At Huawei Amsterdam Research Center, we are shaping the next generation of AI systems that can understand not only information, but also human emotion. Our mission is to make interactions between people and technology more natural, empathic, and engaging.

We are looking for researchers who are excited by the challenge of combining advanced machine learning with insights from human emotion and interaction.

Role Overview:

As a Research Engineer in Affective Computing, you will explore how AI can recognize and respond to emotional cues across different modalities such as face, voice, and text. Your work will contribute to applications that make human–machine interaction more expressive, adaptive, and human-centered.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Carry out research on affective computing, multimodal learning, and emotion-aware AI.
  • Design and evaluate algorithms and models that improve emotional understanding and response.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to bring research into practical applications.
  • Stay engaged with the latest developments in AI and publish in leading venues.

Qualifications:

  • PhD. or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Affective Computing, or a related field.
  • Strong programming skills in Python, and solid experience with deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch or TensorFlow.
  • Practical experience or familiarity with multimodal large language models (MLLMs), including applications in speech processing such as emotion detection, or expressive synthesis.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills, with an ability to work both independently and collaboratively.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proven track record of research publications in relevant conferences and journals.
  • Hands-on experience with multimodal data analysis, training, tuning, or evaluating MLLMs, and familiarity with foundation models in multimodal contexts.
  • Awareness of the latest state-of-the-art MLLMs and their architectural advances, such as long-context support, chain-of-thought prompting, or reasoning capabilities.
  • Familiarity with human-computer interaction (HCI) principles.
  • Previous involvement in interdisciplinary research projects.
  • Knowledge of ethical considerations in affective computing.
