Space Apps is an international hackathon that brings together coders, scientists, designers, makers, and technologists to address challenges on Earth and in space. The Space Apps Community uses NASA data, tools, and technologies to create a better world.

NASA Space Apps is the worldโs largest global hackathon, bringing together developers, scientists, designers, engineers, and creators from around the world. Participants use real NASA data to build innovative solutions that address both global space challenges and local Earth-focused problems.
The Zurich edition focuses on Earth observation, climate, geospatial analytics, and Swiss-centric space challenges โ all using cutting-edge tools like SAR radar data, satellite imagery, Google Earth Engine, and machine learning.
Weโre looking for passionate and skilled Machine Learning Engineers and Data Scientists to join our local teams in Zurich for the 2025 NASA Space Apps Challenge.
As a Data Science Specialist, you'll:
- Work hands-on with NASAโs open data and satellite datasets
- Apply machine learning, geospatial analysis, and data visualization to real-world problems
- Contribute to solving Swiss-specific space and Earth challenges, such as environmental monitoring, land use change detection, disaster response, and more
- Collaborate in fast-paced, interdisciplinary teams over 48 hours
- Leverage tools like Google Earth Engine, Python, Jupyter Notebooks, and ML frameworks (TensorFlow, PyTorch, etc.)
This is a volunteer, on-site opportunity designed for those passionate about open science, climate innovation, and space technology.
We welcome participants from all backgrounds, but the following skills will help you stand out:
- Strong foundations in data science, machine learning, and statistics
- Experience working with large geospatial datasets
- Proficiency in Python, NumPy, Pandas, scikit-learn, or deep learning libraries
- Familiarity with satellite imagery, remote sensing, or SAR radars and Satelite data
- Hands-on knowledge of Google Earth Engine or similar platforms (preferred)
- Creative thinking, teamwork, and strong communication skills
- Enthusiasm for space, science, and hacking for a better planet ๐
- Contribute to global innovation using real NASA data
- Collaborate with a dynamic community of scientists, developers, and creatives
- Tackle real-world challenges with impact โ both locally and globally
- Learn and network in an exciting, high-energy, space-themed environment
